{"id":136051,"date":"2026-02-17T12:32:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T12:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/136051\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T12:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T12:32:07","slug":"moonrise-bagels-brings-its-viral-stuffed-bagels-to-the-west-village-redefines-the-nyc-staple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/136051\/","title":{"rendered":"Moonrise Bagels brings its viral stuffed bagels to the West Village, redefines the NYC staple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a city known for its bagels, Moonrise Bagels Co-Founder Ali Chetkof insists, \u201cYou\u2019ve never had a bagel like this before.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The peculiar bagel shop is going viral for selling stuffed bagels with fillings such as Buffalo Chicken, Pastrami Reuben and even a Bacon, Egg and Cheese.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Moonrise Bagels opened its first New York City location in the West Village, located at 58 W 8th St, on Dec. 5, 2025. Since opening, Moonrise Bagels has been a major success, seeing lines out the door even two months after its grand opening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chetkof, and her husband, Jeremy Rhodes, first thought of the baffling idea to stuff a bagel while spending New Year\u2019s Eve 2020 with their family. Rhodes was preparing pizza for the family and ended up making too much tomato sauce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead of letting the sauce go to waste, Rhodes stuffed it, along with pizza toppings, into the bagel dough he had resting for breakfast. Soon after, the treats were devoured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first ones didn\u2019t quite work, but the flavors were amazing,\u201d Rhodes said.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/?attachment_id=137832097\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-137832097 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-137832097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DSC_0151.jpg\" alt=\"moonrise bagel shop interior\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"Moonrise Bagels brings its viral stuffed bagels to the West Village, redefines the NYC staple 2\"  \/><\/a>Moonrise Bagels redefines the classic NYC bagel by stuffing it with various fillings.Photo by Isabella Bernabeo\n<\/p>\n<p>As his mother ran a catering service in Hoboken, NJ, Rhodes was used to having a home-cooked meal on the table while growing up. It wasn\u2019t until the COVID-19 pandemic that he himself seriously got into baking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was getting a little restless right before the pandemic, and was looking for a fun little hobby,\u201d Rhodes said. \u201cI toyed around with a couple of things, and then my brain just aligned with baking, in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After about five months of experimenting with different bagel doughs, shapes and fillings, the stuffed bagels were made ready for the public. Rhodes and Chetkof ended up receiving an inquiry from someone asking if they could buy some of the stuffed bagels, which led the way for the couple to begin selling the unusually delicious product out of their apartment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe quickly outgrew that,\u201d Chetkof said. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t eat anything else because our fridge was filled with bagels\u2026we started doing pop-ups at some local places in Woodstock [New York]\u2026selling out all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When a nearby sandwich shop approached the couple with an offer to take over their lease, they realized a dream of having their own storefront.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a yearly [lease] so we basically were like\u2026we might as well give it a try,\u201d Chetkof said. \u201cWe took out a bank loan. We painted the counter blue, and we started selling bagels. We had no idea what we were doing; we figured it out along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/?attachment_id=137832098\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-137832098 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-137832098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DSC_0190.jpg\" alt=\"Fresh bagels from Moonrise Bagels.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"Moonrise Bagels brings its viral stuffed bagels to the West Village, redefines the NYC staple 3\"  \/><\/a>Fresh bagels from Moonrise Bagels.Photo by Isabella Bernabeo<\/p>\n<p>The first Moonrise Bagels location opened in December 2021 in Woodstock, NY, only about a year after Rhodes had first thought of the idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their storefront became a major hit, and not too long after, they outgrew that space, too. In 2024, Moonrise Bagels expanded to their second location in Poughkeepsie, where they could also start running their own commissary kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll [the products] get handmade upstate in our Poughkeepsie commissary kitchen, and then we drive it to our stores every evening, and it gets boiled and baked on site throughout the day,\u201d Chetkof said.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few months later, they opened their third location \u2013 a seasonal pop-up shop located inside a 100-square-foot space attached to a local bar in Kingston.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, about a year later, Moonrise Bagels opened its doors in the West Village.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to be in a city, and we happened to live near the bagel capital of the world,\u201d Chetkof said. \u201cNew York City was the next obvious choice.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/?attachment_id=137832099\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-137832099 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-137832099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_9882-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1200\" title=\"Moonrise Bagels brings its viral stuffed bagels to the West Village, redefines the NYC staple 4\"  \/><\/a>The bacon, egg and cheese stuffed bagel.Photo by Isabella Bernabeo\n<\/p>\n<p>The menu has seven permanent flavors, along with a range of additional rotating flavors.
