NEW YORK, NY \u2013 Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that New York State will provide an additional $1.5 billion in operating expenses to address New York City\u2019s fiscal challenges. The funding is allocated over two years, with $1 billion designated for City Fiscal Year 26 and $510 million for City Fiscal Year 27.<\/p>\n
The investment includes $510 million in recurring funding. This recurring funding targets costs that had previously shifted from the state to New York City. Approximately $300 million is for youth programming, $150 million restores sales tax receipts, and $60 million is allocated for public health initiatives. An additional $500 million is set aside for shared priorities that will be determined in future discussions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking New Yorkers did not create this budget crisis and they should not be the ones to pay for it,” Mamdani said. “After years of staggering fiscal mismanagement under the previous administration, our city deserves responsible and collaborative leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n
This investment follows Governor Hochul’s consistent support for New York City since taking office, including a recent commitment to expand universal child care.<\/p>\n
\u201cA strong New York City means a stronger New York State,” Hochul said. “This investment protects services and puts the city on stable financial footing.\u201d <\/p>\n
The Mayor recently reduced New York City\u2019s budget gap to $7 billion through in-year reserves, an agency savings plan and higher-than-expected revenues.
