With winter\u2019s frigid temperatures and lingering snow keeping many older adults indoors, nearly\u00a0 500 Bronx seniors came together in Co-Op City on February 11 for something more than a\u00a0 Valentine\u2019s celebration \u2014 they came for social connection that is vital to heart health.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Social isolation affects 1 in 5 older New Yorkers and significantly raises the risk of heart attack\u00a0 and stroke. During colder months, those risks can increase as older adults face mobility\u00a0 challenges and fewer opportunities to socialize.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The annual Valentine\u2019s Day Experience organized by the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau and\u00a0 Healthfirst was created to counter that isolation.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
The atmosphere was joyful and lively, as attendees danced to music played by the NYPD Jazz\u00a0 Ensemble, received personal care treatments and enjoyed lunch. Bronx Borough President\u00a0 Vanessa L. Gibson, who attended the event, emphasized the importance of older adults\u00a0 prioritizing their health after spending much of their lives taking care of others.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur older adults are the heart of the Bronx. Events like this bring people together during a\u00a0 challenging winter season and create spaces for connection and access to resources,\u201d said\u00a0 Borough President Gibson. \u201cThank you to Healthfirst and the NYPD for their continued\u00a0 collaboration and commitment to supporting our older adults.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
As colder weather keeps more seniors indoors, Healthfirst emphasized that social connection is\u00a0 an important part of protecting heart health.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter weeks of an especially cold winter, moments of connection can make a real difference,\u201d\u00a0 said Miguel Centeno, Vice President of Community Engagement at Healthfirst. \u201cAt Healthfirst,\u00a0 we know that health is about more than doctor visits\u2014it\u2019s about feeling supported and staying\u00a0 connected. Social connection plays a critical role in heart health and overall well-being,\u00a0 especially for older adults. That\u2019s why events like the Older Adults Valentine\u2019s Day Experience\u00a0 matter: they help prevent social isolation, strengthen community bonds, and support heart health\u00a0 for older New Yorkers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
In addition to promoting social connection, Healthfirst representatives shared information about\u00a0 Medicare Advantage health plans designed for New Yorkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
