{"id":137729,"date":"2026-02-18T19:01:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/137729\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T19:01:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:01:18","slug":"trans-teens-across-new-york-city-scramble-after-nyu-langone-shutters-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/137729\/","title":{"rendered":"Trans teens across New York City scramble after NYU Langone shutters care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"ownsd\">Transgender teens who have been receiving gender-affirming care at NYU Langone Health are scrambling to find care elsewhere, after the hospital system announced it will shutter its trans youth health program.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"3c4t7\">Rachel, a Brooklyn mother whose 16-year-old son has been receiving hormone therapy at NYU Langone Health for the past two years, said she was told this week her son can get a 30-day refill of testosterone \u201cand that\u2019s it.\u201d She asked Gothamist not to share her last name to protect her family\u2019s privacy.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"dn5gp\">\u201cThey\u2019re just completely abandoning trans youth and it&#8217;s disgusting and it&#8217;s dangerous,\u201d Rachel said. \u201cThese kids need care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"4c0tj\">NYU Langone is closing its program as the Trump administration threatens to pull federal funding from hospitals that provide treatments such as hormones or puberty blockers to minors. The Trump administration in December <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/new-york-ag-vows-to-fight-new-trump-proposals-to-ban-gender-affirming-care-for-trans-youth\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">proposed new rules<\/a> that would prohibit Medicare or Medicaid funding from flowing to hospitals that provide such gender-affirming treatments to patients under 18. Hospitals rely heavily on these massive public insurance programs for revenue.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8lhol\">Those rules were subject to a 60-day public comment period and are still in the process of being finalized. But some local elected officials said Wednesday they are concerned that other hospital systems will follow suit.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"e3u0m\">\u201cGiven the recent departure of our medical director, coupled with the current regulatory environment, we made the difficult decision to discontinue our Transgender Youth Health Program,\u201d Steve Ritea, a spokesperson for NYU Langone Health, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"38vp1\">He added, \u201cWe are committed to helping patients in our care manage this change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"a042s\">Rachel said her son will now be receiving care at Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"dms9h\">Asked for comment Wednesday on the move to restrict access to trans care, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services pointed to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/hhs-acts-bar-hospitals-performing-sex-rejecting-procedures-children.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">December announcement<\/a> on the proposed rules.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"7mn2s\">\u201cUnder my leadership, and answering President Trump\u2019s call to action, the federal government will do everything in its power to stop unsafe, irreversible practices that put our children at risk,\u201d HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said at the time.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"53qsa\">NYU Langone is one of multiple major medical centers in New York City that have developed prominent programs for trans youth in recent years, contributing to the city\u2019s reputation as a haven for LGBTQ+ young people.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8iggt\">But in January of last year, when President Donald Trump first threatened to pull funding from hospitals providing this care, NYU Langone began canceling appointments for young patients \u2014 a move that immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/trans-teens-and-their-parents-herald-nyc-for-gender-affirming-care-but-worry-about-the-future\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">sparked protests<\/a>. New York Attorney General Letitia James <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/ag-james-tells-ny-hospitals-refusing-gender-affirming-care-could-violate-state-human-rights-law\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">warned hospitals<\/a> at the time that they could be violating the state\u2019s antidiscrimination laws by denying patients certain services.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"8bqcn\">Local elected officials and LGBTQ+ rights groups railed against the news on Wednesday of NYU Langone completely discontinuing its trans health program.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"degce\">\u201cFor these young patients, gender-affirming care is life-affirming care, and it\u2019s my hope that other health care providers will step in immediately to continue to provide this critical treatment,\u201d said Manhattan Borough President Brad Holyman-Sigal.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"er534\">State Sen.
