The Metropolitan Transportation Authority expanded its Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) program to the B68, B60, and M57 lines, targeting vehicles that improperly used bus lanes, blocked bus stops, or double-parked along the corridors.

Under the enforcement structure, penalties started at $50 for a first violation and increased up to $250 for repeat offenders. Officials said the expansion was part of a broader effort to improve bus reliability and safety for riders across the city.

Never miss new stories in Harlem

The initiative, administered by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York City Department of Finance, relied on cameras mounted on buses to capture violations. Video footage, still images, license plate information, and time and location data were transmitted securely to city agencies for review and processing before summonses were issued.

At the time of the rollout, the three routes joined 54 corridors already covered by automated enforcement. More than 1,600 buses had been equipped with ACE technology, spanning roughly 560 miles and benefiting nearly one million daily riders.

Transit officials reported measurable improvements on routes with enforcement cameras. On average, bus speeds had increased about 5% beyond gains already achieved through dedicated bus lanes, with some corridors experiencing improvements of up to 30%. Collision rates had dropped by approximately 20%, while emissions were estimated to have declined between 5% and 10% due to smoother traffic flow. Officials also noted a 40% reduction in vehicles blocking bus stops along ACE routes.

Data at the time suggested the program was also effective as a deterrent.
