The event marked the beginning of the holy month of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/lifestyle-culture\/ramadan-mubarak-brooklyns-muslim-community-begins-the-holy-month-of-prayer-fasting-and-celebration-6548845\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ramadan<\/a> and marked the first time a crescent lighting has ever taken place at Brooklyn Borough Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRamadan is a sacred holiday for Muslims across the world, and I am so proud to celebrate with Brooklyn\u2019s diverse Muslim community at the People\u2019s House, Brooklyn Borough Hall,\u201d Reynoso said in a statement. \u201cFrom the Arab community on Atlantic Avenue to the South Asian community on Coney Island Avenue, our borough has long been shaped and strengthened by our Muslim neighbors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ramadan is observed by Muslims around the world and reflects the global and diverse nature of Islam, the world\u2019s second-largest faith.\u00a0The Muslim community in New York City is nearly 800,000 people strong, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispu.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MAP-NYC-Report-Web-3.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">according to Muslims for American Progress<\/a>. Some will wake up before sunrise to eat a small meal, called suhoor, before the fast begins. Each day&#8217;s fast is broken with a festive meal, called iftar. Traditionally, a date is eaten to break the fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLighting the crescent at Brooklyn Borough Hall is a deeply meaningful moment for Muslim New Yorkers.
