Catie spotted new scaffolding at 335\u2013337 W55th Street \u2014 a building that\u2019s become a neighborhood endurance test since construction began back in 2012. What really caught her eye: lilac posters taped around the site, laying out the neighbors\u2019 running list of grievances and basically asking the question everyone on the block has asked at some point: Will this ever end?<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s fresh trigger was safety. A DOB complaint said inspectors observed pieces of plaster falling from underneath a fifth-floor balcony onto the street and pedestrian sidewalk, prompting a partial stop work order for exterior work. The posters (and our research) also point to the deeper backstory \u2014 a once\u2013rent-stabilized SRO pair that morphed into an illegal hotel saga and then a drawn-out, never-quite-finished rebuild \u2014 while the building now sits on the market \u201cas-is\u201d for $14.9 million.<\/p>\n
