Kathy Hochul will pull another switcheroo and raise taxes after the November elections \u2014 like she did when imposing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/13\/us-news\/gov-hochul-to-relaunch-controversial-nyc-congestion-pricing-sources\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">congestion pricing <\/a>after the 2024 campaigns, Republican elected officials claim.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Hochul, who is seeking re-election to a second full, 4-year term this fall, insisted she won\u2019t buckle to New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/17\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-to-unveil-122b-budget-fueled-by-proposed-nyc-property-tax-hike\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s request for Albany to raise income taxes<\/a> on the rich and hike corporate taxes to help close a Big Apple budget shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/01\/us-news\/cowardly-gov-hochul-will-raise-new-yorks-taxes-after-the-election-ex-gov-pataki-warns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans said voters can\u2019t trust her<\/a>, citing the turnabout on congestion pricing.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38547027\" width=\"734\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/new-york-state-governor-kathy-121589704.jpg\" alt=\"NY Governor Kathy Hochul speaking to workers at the Gateway Project construction site.\" class=\"wp-image-38547027\" style=\"width:734px;height:auto;aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\"  \/>New York Republicans are claiming that Gov. Kathy Hochul will likely wait until after the gubernatorial election to raise taxes. ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce elected Hochul did a U Turn on congestion pricing and she will do the same by raising taxes on not just millionaires but all middle class families through higher utility bills, commuter costs and hidden fees,\u201d said GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Blakeman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, Governor Hochul pulled the wool over the eyes of taxpayers by first pausing congestion pricing and then resuming it after Election Day. There is no reason to believe that she won\u2019t do the same with raising taxes after November,\u201d said Assemblyman Michael Tannousis, also the Staten Island Republican Party chairman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters beware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Transportation Authority was scheduled to implement congestion pricing in June 2024. But Hochul, with much fanfare, issued a \u201cpause\u201d or suspension of the program amid a backlash, including from parts of the city that have no subways and rely more on driving to get around the city.<\/p>\n<p>Published reports at the time said Democrats \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/05\/us-news\/gov-kathy-hochul-considering-delaying-congestion-pricing-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries <\/a>eyeing to become the next speaker \u2014 urged Hochul to back off implementing the new toll to protect the party\u2019s candidates in congressional races.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.90625;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38547037\" width=\"535\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/121599331-1.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of Mayor Mamdani dressed as a cowboy, holding guns with communist flags, threatening Governor Hochul to raise taxes or else, on the front page of the New York Post.\" class=\"wp-image-38547037\"  \/>Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned Hochul and Albany lawmakers that he will raise property taxes in the city to fund his budget if they don\u2019t hike taxes on the wealthy.<\/p>\n<p>She resurrected congestion pricing \u2014 albeit a lower $9 fee to enter Midtown south of 60th Street \u2014 in November 2024, following the elections, and the tolls took effect the following January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFool me once, shame on you Fool me twice, shame on me,\u201d said Queens GOP Councilwoman Joann Ariola.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHochul did it with congestion pricing. She\u2019ll do it with taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GOP Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis said Hochul should sign a \u201cno tax pledge\u201d but \u201ceven then, I\u2019d be skeptical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe stopped the congestion tax two years ago because it was a third rail for Democrats, then brought it back immediately after the election. When it comes to taking money from New Yorkers, Kathy Hochul just can\u2019t be trusted,\u201d said Malliotakis, who represents Staten Island and southern Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-SI) chimed in,\u201dHer track record would certainly portend that action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe single greatest factor and cause of New York\u2019s unaffordability problem: Democrat and socialist taxes and policies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A Hochul spokesperson said Thursday that \u201cthe governor has been clear she won\u2019t raise taxes for the sake of raising taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers can trust that Governor Hochul will continue delivering on her affordability agenda that includes a substantial child tax credit, no tax on tips and a record middle class tax cut that will deliver nearly $1 billion in tax relief to millions of New Yorkers beginning this year,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gov.
