Younger Americans would like a word. We\u2019ve noticed that many of you are pretty upset about the state of the nation. And we get it. We really do. But do you ever stop and ask yourselves how we got here?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-8hvvyd\">\u201cHey, boomers!\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s easy to wave signs saying, \u2018I can\u2019t believe I\u2019m still protesting this [EXPLETIVE]!\u2019 But if you\u2019re looking to hold someone accountable \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cOwn the world you made.\u201d \u201cProtest yourselves.\u201d \u201cAmericans born in the decades after World War II were handed the world on a silver platter.\u201d \u201cCheap college.\u201d \u201cCheap housing.\u201d \u201cAbundant opportunity.\u201d \u201cThe vast majority of you ended up wealthier than your parents.\u201d \u201cAnd Lord knows it wasn\u2019t because you were smarter or worked harder.\u201d \u201cIt was because America was an escalator.\u201d \u201cYou just had to stand on it.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve been an electoral powerhouse since the \u201880s.\u201d \u201cWhen presented with a choice between protecting your interests\u201d \u201cor investing in a better future for your children \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cYou usually chose yourselves.\u201d \u201cCan you believe it?\u201d \u201cMore benefits for boomers.\u201d \u201cMore tax cuts for boomers.\u201d \u201cAnd borrowed money to make up the difference.\u201d \u201cOver the past quarter-century, you\u2019ve put almost $30 trillion on the national credit card on behalf of future generations stuck with the bill \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s your problem?\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s your problem?\u201d \u201cA year at a public university \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cCosts almost four times as much as it did in 1970 after adjusting for inflation.\u201d \u201cThe average house cost more than two times as much.\u201d \u201cAnd you made it difficult for younger Americans to live in the cities with the best jobs.\u201d \u201cYou regularly use your electoral might to squash \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cPlans for new construction and protect your property values.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s like you think democracy only exists so that you can band together en masse to freeze your communities in time.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the reason so many Americans sleep in their cars.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the reason that public schools today are more segregated than they were in 1968.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s easy to blame the nation\u2019s political leaders.\u201d \u201cBut let\u2019s be clear: For the last few decades, they\u2019ve mostly been members of your generation \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cElected with your support \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cTo protect your interests.\u201d \u201cFrom the first boomer president, Bill Clinton \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cTo the current boomer president, who is hopefully the last one.\u201d \u201cThe Bush years were peak boomer. In 2001, when the government\u2019s coffers were overflowing \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cYou did what you always did.\u201d \u201cYou passed a giant tax cut dividing the money amongst yourselves.\u201d \u201cIn 2003, you did it again.\u201d \u201cAnd in 2006, you were all in for a big increase in government spending \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cOn Medicare, just in time for the first boomer retirees.\u201d \u201cYou decided you\u2019d rather have Walmarts than factory jobs.\u201d \u201cAnd you didn\u2019t ask too many questions about the low, low price of your super-size flat-screen TV.\u201d \u201cYou enjoyed the short-term benefits of deregulating the banking industry \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cTelecommunications \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cAnd a host of other industries \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cLeaving future generations to clean up the mess of corporate consolidation and junk fees.\u201d \u201cBut hey, making things cheaper for yourself at everyone else\u2019s expense is kind of your M.O.\u201d \u201cYou tree-hugging hippies championed environmentalism. But what is your legacy?\u201d \u201cA world that keeps burning more carbon and a planet that keeps getting hotter.\u201d \u201cInstead of actually confronting the problem, you embrace recycling, a con game that allows people to pretend they care about the planet without doing anything even a little difficult \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cLike using fewer plastic bottles.\u201d \u201cYou exported your waste to less wealthy nations or you just dumped it in the ocean. Thanks to you, there\u2019s an island of trash three times the size of France swirling off the coast of California.\u201d \u201cBut don\u2019t think we\u2019re entirely ungrateful.\u201d \u201cWe appreciate the progress that you made on civil rights and gender equality \u2014\u2014\u201d \u201cAlthough you don\u2019t always seem to understand that there\u2019s still a lot of work to do.\u201d \u201cThanks for the avocados, some good music and the World Wide Web.
