Thomas F. O\u2019Mara of the 58th District sponsored bill S1500, with co-sponsorship from Sen. Bill Weber of the 38th District. The measure would amend state vehicle and traffic law to allow the Department of Transportation commissioner and the New York State Thruway Authority to increase speed limits on highways that currently have a 65 mph maximum, provided the roadways meet department criteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ACABSNKCKZESRL2DLVN3B7KUC4\">Lawmakers previously introduced similar legislation during the 2023-2024 session. If passed and signed into law, the act would take effect immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E3PIXN5MTFBQXOXW7BC7QSQKCE\">\u201cNew York is one of only seven states that has kept a 65 mph speed limit on major interstates despite all the technology and safety features on so many modern vehicles,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressconnects.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/02\/06\/new-york-state-highways-speed-limit-increase-tom-omara\/69866142007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z117961v117961d--79--b--79--&amp;gca-ft=130&amp;gca-ds=sophi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pressconnects.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/02\/06\/new-york-state-highways-speed-limit-increase-tom-omara\/69866142007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z117961v117961d--79--b--79--&amp;gca-ft=130&amp;gca-ds=sophi\">O\u2019Mara told the Binghamton Press in 2023<\/a>. \u201cMost states have increased the speed limit to 70 mph, including neighboring Pennsylvania. Many have gone even higher, and it\u2019s time for New York state to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AFOPS52WL5CU7BIWIU6YXHQF4I\">Major highways that would be affected include the Governor Thomas E.
