But New York City&#8217;s Health Department is watching.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, inspectors arrive unannounced at more than 25,000 restaurants to examine health and safety standards. Most eateries pass inspections, but some fall short of the city&#8217;s standards, accruing violation <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/rii\/restaurant-grading-faq.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">points<\/a> for everything from broken light bulbs to &#8220;public health hazards,&#8221; like vermin and failure to follow food safety protocols.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants hit with non-food-safety <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2010\/03\/marc_murphy_is_still_rather_wo.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">violations<\/a> might get a fine or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/rii\/restaurant-grading-faq.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lower letter grade<\/a>, with zero to 13 points warranting an &#8216;A&#8217; and violations totaling 28 points or more earning a &#8216;C&#8217; (this system is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2020\/03\/why-chefs-are-terrified-of-the-nyc-health-department.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticized<\/a> for its efficacy by some gourmands).<\/p>\n<p>Public health hazards that can&#8217;t be resolved on the spot, like a mouse or fly infestation, pose a bigger issue: immediate closure.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s all the eateries that the Department of Health closed down since Feb. 13.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan <\/p>\n<p>PapaThai (2115 Federick Douglass Blvd.) <\/p>\n<p>Violation Points: 14 <\/p>\n<p>Establishment is not free of harborage or conditions conducive to rodents, insects or other pests.Live roaches in facility&#8217;s food or non-food area.Evidence of rats or live rats in establishment&#8217;s food or non-food areas.<\/p>\n<p>Punta Cana To Go (2102 Amsterdam Ave.)<\/p>\n<p>Violation Points: 80<\/p>\n<p>Properly scaled and calibrated thermometer or thermocouple not provided or not readily accessible in food preparation and hot\/cold holding areas to measure temperatures of TCS foods during cooking, cooling, reheating, and holding.Anti-siphonage or back-flow prevention device not provided where required; equipment or floor not properly drained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly.
