ALBANY \u2013\u00a0New York\u00a0will no longer give commercial driver\u2019s licenses to non-citizens, following the Trump administration\u2019s tightening of restrictions and\u00a0threats to withhold $73 million in federal funding<\/a>\u00a0from the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon specific order from the federal government, New York\u2019s non-domiciled CDL program is indefinitely paused, including renewals,\u201d New York Department of Motor Vehicles spokesperson Walter McClure told\u00a0Newsday<\/a>,\u00a0which first reported the development on Friday.<\/p>\n

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in December had warned the Empire State that it could lose out on million in federal dollars if it didn\u2019t stop\u00a0giving licenses\u00a0to non-citizens.<\/p>\n

\"ANew York state will no longer give driver\u2019s licenses to non-citizen immigrants, following a tightening of restrictions and threats to withhold funding from the Trump administration. Oklahoma.gov<\/p>\n

Duffy cited an audit of 200 New York commercial driver\u2019s licenses by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that found 107 were approved unlawfully.<\/p>\n

The US Department of Transportation has been cracking down on liberal states like New York and California for letting migrants behind the wheels of trucks.<\/p>\n

The feds\u00a0revoked DOT<\/a>\u00a0guidance allowing non-citizens with federal work authorization to obtain CDLs last year.<\/p>\n

The move came around the same time authorities in Oklahoma\u00a0arrested a man<\/a>\u00a0with a New York REAL ID CDL listing his first name as \u201cno name given.\u201d\u00a0The Department of Homeland Security\u00a0later identified the man as Anmol Anmol<\/a>, an Indian national, and said he\u2019d entered the US illegally in 2023.<\/p>\n

He now faces deportation, per DHS.<\/p>\n

The issue was hoisted to the forefront in December, when another illegal immigrant from India,\u00a0Harjinder Singh, was\u00a0accused of causing a crash<\/a>\u00a0that killed three people in Florida.<\/p>\n

Singh, it was later revealed, was unable to identify basic road signs during his CDL test in California and could barely understand English.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the Trucking Association of New York State said it was supportive of Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2019s move to pause giving migrants CDLs.<\/p>\n

\u201cTruck drivers are essential to our state\u2019s economy and the movement of goods nationwide.
