MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball split a doubleheader against Staten Island at Day 1 of the Cal Ripken Experience. The Owls lost game one 9-5 before winning game two 12-6. Southern moves to 2-3 on the season. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Brennan Staubley<\/a> led the team offensively, going 5-5 with a triple and one run scored in game one before going 1-3 with a solo home run in game two. He has now hit three home runs in five games this season. Devin Pelletier<\/a> and Jake Chacho<\/a> each hit their second homers of the season, and Auggie Albert<\/a> roped his first home run of the year, going 4-6 with 4 RBIs.<\/p>\n GAME 1<\/p>\n Colin Blake<\/a> got the start for Southern and threw three innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) and striking out three batters.\u00a0<\/p>\n Staten Island got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a double and a sacrifice fly. They added another unearned run in the second before adding three more in the third. They went up 7-0 in the fourth off of another sac fly. Payton Powell<\/a> entered in relief and settled things down, throwing two scoreless inning and striking out five.\u00a0<\/p>\n Southern bounced back in the sixth, with a single from Chacho driving in Staubley. Albert drilled a three-run homer to give the Owls a four-run inning, cutting the lead to three. Chacho forced a throwing error in the eighth to score Southern’s fifth run.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Dolphins would add some insurance off of Jake O’Connor<\/a>, who entered in the eighth, scoring two unearned to extend the lead back to four, where it would hold for the remainder of the game. O’Connor pitched well, allowing only one hit and walking one batter while striking out six in two innings of work.\u00a0<\/p>\n GAME 2 (7 inn.)<\/p>\n CSI kicked off the scoring again, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning off of a home run, a triple, and a single. The Owls bounced right back in the bottom of the inning when Jake Chacho<\/a> launched a solo bomb, his second of the year. Cody Heselton<\/a> would settle in after the second in his first start of the season, allowing four runs over four innings and striking out seven.\u00a0<\/p>\n Staten Island extended their lead with another RBI single in the fourth, but Southern answered again with another home run, this time off the bat of Brennan Staubley<\/a>. The Owls’ offense broke out in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Scalia<\/a> launched a three-run double, bringing home Zaid Vohra<\/a>, Auggie Albert<\/a>, and Chacho. Ryan Fedeli<\/a> brought in Scalia with a single, then Spencer Chard<\/a> reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Fedeli to score on an error. Chard and Devin Pelletier<\/a> both scored on another error, and Albert doubled to drive in the fifth and final run of the inning. Johnny O’Brien<\/a> would earn his second win of the season after entering in relief of Heselton and throwing and 1.1 innings.<\/p>\n The Dolphins would respond with a two-run double in the next inning to cut the lead, but Devin Pelletier<\/a> would shut the door with his second home run of the year in the sixth.
