The warning \u2014 the first of its kind since 2017 \u2014 has been put into effect from 6 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The upcoming storm comes courtesy of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/02\/20\/noreaster-coming-nyc-winter-storm-watch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:growing nor\u2019easter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">growing nor\u2019easter<\/a> that could <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSNewYorkNY\/status\/2025140462227730886\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:dump more than a foot of snow on the Big Apple;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">dump more than a foot of snow on the Big Apple<\/a> and the rest of the tristate area. It could also bring \u201cheavy blowing snow and winds gusting up to 55 mph,\u201d resulting in treacherous whiteout conditions, forecasters said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cConfidence is increasing in a major coastal winter storm that will bring significant snowfall and strong winds to New York City,\u201d NYC Emergency Management wrote on social media Saturday morning. \u201cTotal <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nycemergencymgt\/status\/2025195986021199933?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:snowfall is currently forecast around 13 to 17 inches;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">snowfall is currently forecast around 13 to 17 inches<\/a>, with higher totals possible in southern parts of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NYCEM later said there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nycemergencymgt\/status\/2025212372365750509\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201c20-25% chance of a worst-case scenario\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201c20-25% chance of a worst-case scenario\u201d<\/a> bringing up to 23 inches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Flakes are expected to begin falling as early as 4 a.m. Sunday but be light until the early evening. Heavier snow is expected to roll in around 6 p.m. and rapidly increase, becoming its most intense overnight and Monday morning. The snow could easily exceed 1.5 inches per hour, with \u201cpotential bursts of 2-3 inches per hour,\u201d NYCEM said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meteorologists have warned of extremely dangerous travel conditions for Monday commuters as areas of blowing snow could create \u201cnear-zero visibility,\u201d while the \u201ccombination of gusty winds and heavy wet snow could bring down tree branches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Minor coastal flooding is also expected, \u201cwith a strong chance of moderate flooding along Jamaica Bay, Staten Island, the Battery, and parts of the Bronx and northern Queens,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Those with air travel plans should be prepared for widespread flight cancellations, delays and ground stops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cHigh winds, low visibility and the need to clear runways and de-ice aircraft will disrupt operations Sunday night through Monday, with ripple effects lasting into Tuesday or beyond,\u201d NYCEM said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As of early Saturday afternoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/tomorrow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:nearly 70 flights into and out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">nearly 70 flights into and out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports<\/a> had already been canceled for Sunday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Forecasters predict the precipitation will taper off entirely by Monday afternoon, at which point New Yorkers will once again have to dig themselves out of the snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Temperatures will stay cold enough for it to stick through at least the middle of the week, before conditions begin to rebound.
