Royal Waster Services took delivery of its first Mack LR Electric garbage truck in December \u2014 and they\u2019re happy enough with their big EV\u2019s performance to have placed an order for three more, helping Bronx residents sleep in, and breathe easier.<\/p>\n

Funded in part by the New York Truck Voucher Incentive Program (NYTVIP) administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), that first Mack LR Electric has put in an incredible performance over its first eight weeks of deployment, collecting ~75 tons of waste per week while maintaining 100 percent operational uptime.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter seeing positive results with our initial Mack LR Electric<\/a>, and with the support from the voucher incentive program, adding three more units was a natural next step for our fleet,\u201d says Michael Angelo Reali, district manager for Royal Waste Services. \u201cThe move to electric propulsion delivers environmental and community benefits, enhances driver comfort, and provides fuel and maintenance cost savings.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to hauling as much as its diesel stablemates without the noise and noxious gasses of diesel, Royal Waste Svcs\u2019 drivers are reporting reduced fatigue due to the absence of engine vibration, along with improved control and responsiveness compared with the traditional diesel-powered trucks on their tough, stop-and-go collection routes.<\/p>\n

With happier, healthier employees and happier, healthier customers highlighting the benefits of electric drive, expanding the Mack fleet was a no-brainer.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoyal Waste Services\u2019 decision to expand its Mack LR Electric fleet demonstrates the operational viability of electric refuse vehicles in demanding urban environments,\u201d explains Mack Trucks vice president and e-mobility business unit leader<\/a>, George Fotopoulos. \u201cThe company\u2019s continued investment in zero-tailpipe emission technology reflects both the performance of the LR Electric and its commitment to sustainable waste collection operations in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mack LR Electric features a 376 kWh battery pack that sends power to a pair of high-efficiency electric motors good for 448 combined hp and a mountainous, 4,051 lb-ft of torque at zero (0) RPM, making it ideally suited for the heavy loads and stop-start demands of urban refuse collection. A two-stage regenerative braking system recaptures energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day, greatly extending the trucks\u2019 useful operating range as well.<\/p>\n

Royal Waste Services received its first Mack LR Electric as part of \u201cThe Bronx Is Breathing<\/a>\u201d initiative, a project funded through the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, which supports the state\u2019s goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improving air quality, particularly in disadvantaged communities.<\/p>\n
