{"id":141918,"date":"2026-02-22T18:07:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T18:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/141918\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T18:07:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T18:07:13","slug":"all-nyc-public-schools-will-be-closed-monday-bringing-back-old-school-snow-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/141918\/","title":{"rendered":"All NYC public schools will be closed Monday, bringing back \u2018old-school\u2019 snow day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/new-york\/blizzard-warning-nyc-snow-february-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">major winter storm<\/a> approaches NYC, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Sunday that all public schools will be closed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>There will be no be remote classes, the mayor said, giving the nearly 1 million public school students in NYC their first traditional snow day since 2019. The decision to close the schools was made for safety reasons, Mamdani explained during a press conference in Brooklyn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the continuity of our children\u2019s education is of the utmost importance, to ensure the safety of students, teachers and parents throughout the storm, schools will be closed tomorrow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While NYS requires students to have 180 days of education in the calendar year, an exemption was granted due to the severity of the storm.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe there is a unique set of circumstances for tomorrow\u2019s education,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cWe shared this with the State Education Commissioner earlier this morning, and she has granted us a waiver, for which we are incredibly grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The storm hits NYC as public students return from a week-long midwinter recess. The break in classes prevented schools from providing students with the materials they would need for remote learning, \u00a0Chancellor Kamar Samuels explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents and staff have been out of buildings for the last week,\u201d he said. \u201cMany are still out of town and out of the country. Given this, and the severe nature of this weather event, we do not believe providing remote instruction tomorrow would be effective. Schools couldn\u2019t send students home with the devices before the break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSNewYorkNY\/status\/2025511507555930540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">National Weather Service<\/a>, the storm could blanket the city with at least a foot of snow by 6 p.m. Monday.
