STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Nearly 1,000 departing flights have been cancelled at the three New York City airports as a massive blizzard looms over the five boroughs. <\/p>\n

According to their respective websites, the number of cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport are as follows: <\/p>\n

The cancellations affect a broad swath of airlines and routes, both domestic and international. <\/p>\n

Travelers must be cognizant that should they remain at the airports in the pursuit of a rescheduled flight, there is a chance that they will stay at the airport through the night. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is shuttering roads to all vehicles except those of essential workers from 9 p.m. Sunday to noon Monday as a part of the local state of emergency blanketing New York City. <\/p>\n

AccuWeather<\/a> Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski told the Advance\/SILive.com that the worst weather \u2014 the expected blizzard \u2014 will come later on Sunday and into early Monday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst of it is going to be this evening and then really into Sunday night and Monday. That\u2019s when we\u2019re going to see the heaviest of the snow and the winds really crank up,\u201d Pydynowski said.<\/p>\n

Storm conditions will increase in intensity beginning around 6 p.m.,<\/a> the senior meteorologist said.<\/p>\n
