STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Several Staten Island restaurant owners say they\u2019re spending the storm day at home, closing their shops and turning to cooking instead. Others happened to be off anyway, since Monday is typically reserved for paperwork, shopping and personal errands.<\/p>\n

Outside Killmeyer\u2019s Old Bavaria Inn in Charleston, snow collected on a massive Hummel figure\u2014the world\u2019s largest \u2014 as owner Kim Boschi used her Monday \u201cday off\u201d to straighten up and prepare for the week ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re closed on Mondays, but we\u2019re cleaning up and getting ready for tomorrow,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re also wondering about our beer delivery.\u201d Still, she takes it all in stride.<\/p>\n

When asked about a special for the next day, she paused\u2014then pointed to a house classic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking the beef goulash,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s pure comfort food. You\u2019ve got petite tenderloin simmered down in a ridiculously rich gravy with carrots, parsnips, onions\u2014then you crown it with homemade mashed potatoes, plenty of butter, and bake it until everything melds.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that peppercorns give the dish its final kick, while mushrooms lend an earthy roundness.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, George Platis at Andrew\u2019s Diner in Great Kills decided to close for the day, and Juan Becerra of Northside Coffee in West Brighton shuttered as well.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Massimo Felici of Don Cheech in Rosebank said he\u2019s hunkering down in his kitchen, working on a beef bourguignon with a grainy cheese polenta\u2014\u201cnot the instant stuff,\u201d he noted. It won\u2019t be ready for a few hours, he said, and will be even better tomorrow. He\u2019ll send a picture when it\u2019s ready. <\/p>\n

At Northside Coffee in West Brighton, Becerra cupped his Oslo mug. \u201cDrinking delicious coffee,\u201d he said. Oslo is the shop\u2019s official roaster. Curled at his feet was his faithful companion, Kona.<\/p>\n

At Italianissimo in South Beach, Franco Ortega went in early to check on things. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs of right now I am enjoying a bowl of fresh fruit and espresso while watching the snow,\u201d he said. Cleanup will come later with his crew after the storm. For now, it\u2019s about enjoying the peace and quiet from the window.<\/p>\n
