<\/p>\nA home fire in the hamlet of Wallkill during the blizzard left a woman dead.<\/p>\n
The Ulster County sheriff said the 67\u2011year\u2011old called 911 Monday morning to report the fire and said she was trapped inside.<\/p>\n
Officers and firefighters were able to get her out, but she suffered several burns. She later died from her injuries at the hospital.<\/p>\n

A 70\u2011year\u2011old man inside the home was able to get out on his own. He was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.<\/p>\n
A police officer was also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.<\/p>\n
Wallkill Fire Chief Gary Specht Jr. said crews \u201carrived on scene to a working house fire \u2014 one person trapped inside.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy assistant chief went inside, grabbed and got her out of the house. CPR was started immediately,\u201d Specht said.<\/p>\n
An Ulster County Sheriff\u2019s deputy at the scene said the fire is being treated as a crime scene. investigators remained at the scene for hours Monday. <\/p>\n
Mutual aid from Orange County responded to assist, and an Orange County fire investigator is also on scene.<\/p>\n

McKayla Slater, who has lived in the neighborhood for five years, said she first noticed the fire while shoveling her driveway during the storm.<\/p>\n
“I had gone over to try to help. The police showed up and we were able to spot her — figure out where she was in the house and help get her out.”<\/p>\n
Slater said the two people who live in the house are an adult brother and sister.<\/p>\n
“They were both pretty bad. The situation was not good,” Slater said. “It was awful. Awful timing. Thankfully, it was a very quick response considering the weather.”<\/p>\n
Specht said the snowstorm may have aided response efforts, as the volunteer department had a full crew already on standby at the firehouse due to the storm.<\/p>\n
News 12 has calls out to Ulster County officials for more information.
