\n\tJohn Turturro\u2019s crime thriller \u201cThe Only Living Pickpocket in New York<\/a>\u201d has sold to Sony Pictures Classics a month after its Sundance Film Festival<\/a> premiere. <\/p>\n

\n\tA release date hasn\u2019t been set but SPC is eyeing a theatrical debut in the fall.<\/p>\n

\n\tWritten and directed by Noah Segan, \u201cPickpocket\u201d follows Harry (Turturro), a veteran of the craft who struggles to keep up with the changing times \u2014 phones are trackable, wallets rarely have cash and guns are hiding in plain sight. When a theft goes awry, Harry embarks on a high-stakes race against time through the Big Apple. Giancarlo Esposito, Tatiana Maslany, Steve Buscemi, Karina Arroyave, Victoria Moroles, Will Price and Jamie Lee Curtis round out the cast.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNoah Segan\u2019s \u2018The Only Living Pickpocket\u2019 is one of the great New York movies ever featuring John Turturro in the finest performance of his career, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a glorious\u00a0entertainment,\u201d Sony Pictures Classics said in a statement. \u201cIt will be a big hit this fall with audiences everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Variety\u2019s review<\/a>, critic Tomris Laffly shared a similar sentiment and praised \u201cThe Only Living Pickpocket in New York\u201d as an \u201cunapologetically local love letter to the Big Apple and its less-illustrious denizens that New York deserves.\u201d She added that \u201cPickpocket\u2019 feels like a new, minor-key New York classic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis is Sony Pictures Classics\u2019 third acquisition out of this year\u2019s Sundance following the crowd-pleasing love story \u201cHa-Chan, Shake Your Booty\u201d and drama \u201cBedford Park.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSegan is best known for working with Rian Johnson on such films as \u201cLooper,\u201d \u201cBrick\u201d and the \u201cKnives Out\u201d trilogy. His last directorial effort was 2022\u2019s \u201cBlood Relatives,\u201d a horror comedy about Jewish vampires. \u201cPickpocket\u201d was produced by Johnson\u2019s T-Street Productions, which backed a prior Sundance darling in Chloe Domont\u2019s psychological thriller \u201cFair Play,\u201d which sold to Netflix <\/a>for a staggering $20 million in 2023.<\/p>\n

\n\tSegan called Sony Pictures Classics co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard \u201clegends in their own right\u201d and thanked them for \u201ciconically supporting the sort of sincerity and care we\u2019ve put into the film.\u201d<\/p>\n
