Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been blasted for fueling anti-cop hate after an unruly mob launched a \u201cdisgusting\u201d\u00a0snowball attack on NYPD officers<\/a>\u00a0during Monday\u2019s blizzard \u2014 as the Big Apple\u2019s police commissioner launched an investigation into the \u201ccriminal\u201d antics.<\/p>\n

Agitators were caught on camera wreaking havoc as they hurled\u00a0huge chunks of snow at police during a massive snowball fight in Manhattan\u2019s Washington Square Park on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and ex-Mayor Eric Adams\u00a0were among those to quickly point\u00a0the finger at Mamdani \u2014 blaming his history of anti-police rhetoric for the violent scenes.<\/p>\n

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is being blasted after a mob launched a \u201cdisgusting\u201d snowball attack on the NYPD during a blizzard. @NYCMayor\/X<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is disgraceful. But with a mayor who has a history of calling the police \u2018racist, evil, wicked and corrupt,\u2019 he set the tone,\u201d\u00a0Cuomo said on X<\/a>\u00a0as he demanded Mamdani denounce the attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cWords have consequences. We are seeing that in the growing disrespect for law enforcement \u2014 just as we\u2019ve seen it in the rise in antisemitism. Real leaders understand that. This mayor does not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams piled on, too, insinuating that Hizzoner and others had set a \u201cterrible example.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching officers get pelted with snow while they are out in brutal weather protecting this city should make every New Yorker furious. It is disgusting behavior,\u201d\u00a0he raged<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the politicians who constantly bash the police and refuse to have their backs are setting a terrible example. Leadership matters. Tone matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is disgraceful. @NYCMayor and every elected official in our city should denounce this juvenile attack on our NYPD. Back the blue and hold those who disrespect them accountable,\u201d US Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) of Staten Island\u00a0added<\/a>.<\/p>\n

GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik blasted Mamdani\u2019s silence, suggesting he was too busy creating social media videos to denounce the ordeal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd of course the Defund the Police anti-law enforcement Socialist Mayor who has a fully produced video with a costume for just about everything has absolutely nothing to say about this disgrace,\u201d she griped.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust silence (and explicit approval\u2026after all \u2018the boot of the NYPD on your neck\u2026\u2019) as NYPD\u2019s bravest and finest get pummeled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hizzoner eventually addressed the mayhem, urging New Yorkers to treat cops with \u201crespect\u201d \u2014 but stopped short of explicitly condeminng the behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen the videos of kids throwing snowballs at NYPD officers in Washington Square Park,\u201d\u00a0he wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving. Treat them with respect.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone\u2019s catching a snowball, it\u2019s me,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n

Mamdani also didn\u2019t demand any consequences, unlike NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch, who\u00a0said police were investigating the antics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NYPD is aware of certain videos taken earlier today in Washington Square Park showing individuals attacking cops,\u201d\u00a0the top cop wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be very clear: The behavior depicted is disgraceful, and it is criminal. Our detectives are investigating this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police haven\u2019t yet said whether any officers were injured but\u00a0City Council Speaker Julie Menin claimed several suffered facial injuries after being struck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are public servants who are out in the cold, in all kinds of conditions, to keep New Yorkers safe. Causing injuries to officers is not a game. We cannot normalize this kind of behavior in our city,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Cop unions also called for arrests to be made.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnacceptable and outrageous \u2014 this is the environment that NYC police officers are up against,\u201d the Police Benevolent Association said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe individuals involved must be identified, arrested and charged with assault on a police officer. And all of our city leaders must speak up to condemn this despicable attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detectives\u2019 Endowment Association president Scott Munro also called out the troublemakers, saying: \u201cWhat we saw in Washington Square Park today was not harmless fun \u2014 it was a deliberate, outrageous, and dangerous attack on uniformed police officers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gov. Kathy Hochul, for her part, issued a brief statement after footage of the snowball saga started going viral, saying: \u201cOur NYPD officers put themselves on the line to protect us every day. It is never acceptable to throw anything at a police officer, full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The violence unfolded when an organized snowball fight with hundreds of winter revelers quickly descended into pure pandemonium just as the snowy conditions were easing on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Police responding to the ruckus were quickly tormented and pelted with snowballs at close range as they patrolled the park.<\/p>\n

At one point, an agitator could be seen dunking a huge chunk of ice on an officer\u2019s head before fleeing.<\/p>\n

The officers were forced to retreat into their SUV and were spotted driving out of the park.<\/p>\n
