WASHINGTON \u2014 Local congressional representatives and other lawmakers in New York State are reacting to President Donald Trump\u2019s first State of the Union address of his second term.<\/p>\n
In the longest State of the Union speech in history, the president defended his policies on the economy, immigration, and foreign policy. He blamed Democrats for many of the nation\u2019s issues and criticized the Supreme Court for its recent ruling that struck down his country-specific tariffs, calling it\u00a0\u201can unfortunate ruling.\u201d The speech comes months before the November midterm elections. Joe Morelle of the 25th District said the State of the Union contained \u201cdangerous lies\u201d and said Trump\u2019s policies fail to tackle rising costs or expand access to healthcare:<\/p>\n \u201cDonald Trump used his State of the Union address to perpetuate dangerous lies, spew hateful rhetoric, and sow chaos and uncertainty into the lives of average Americans. It is clear the President is living in an alternate reality where he is not responsible for tackling rising costs, expanding access to healthcare, or addressing any of the other challenges people face.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cInstead of caring for the long-term prosperity of working families, Donald Trump is engaging in reckless foreign policy, endangering the lives of American servicemembers, jeopardizing the security of our elections, and enriching himself and his billionaire friends. The American people deserve better than this. The President of the United States took an oath to serve the interests of all Americans, not just the rich and powerful. It\u2019s time for Donald Trump to take that oath seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n On the other side of the aisle, Rep. Claudia Tenney of the 24th District praised Trump\u2019s policies on immigration, prescription drug prices, and more. She wrote her reaction on X:<\/p>\n \u201cPresident Trump just laid out the clearest, strongest case for American renewal in a generation. From securing the border to cutting prescription drug costs, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, and driving down fentanyl trafficking, the results speak for themselves. Tonight, the President honored American heroes past and present and reminded every family in this country what real leadership looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer also shared his reaction, saying that Americans have never seen a State of the Union so \u201cdisconnected from reality.\u201d His statement reads in part:<\/p>\n \u201cThe State of the Union address revealed Donald Trump is in a State of Delusion. Donald Trump painted a delusional portrait of America that hardly any working American would recognize. Americans have never seen a State of the Union so disconnected from reality. The president\u2019s rhetoric and the country\u2019s reality are worlds apart. Donald Trump failed to acknowledge in his speech the reality millions of people face every day with higher costs, unaffordable housing, more chaos, and more corruption. Instead he blamed the ills our country faces on everyone but himself.\u201d<\/p>\n The New York State Conservative Party praised the speech, saying Trump laid out a \u201ccommon-sense vision\u201d for the nation\u2019s future. The party said the midterm elections will decide the country\u2019s path forward:<\/p>\n \u201cPresident Trump laid out a bold, bright, common-sense vision for America\u2019s future tonight. His optimism in our nation\u2019s potential could be felt by anyone who watched the speech. This is a President who truly believes in everyday Americans, and who sees a clear path forward for them out of the mires of progressivism.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAt the same time, President Trump laid out a clear and damning case against the unbridled progressivism that nearly brought this country to its knees under President Joe Biden.
