Recess is getting a much-needed update for some students in the South Bronx.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Council Member Althea Stevens announced the city is investing in a $2.4 million makeover for the playground at the Charles Drew Educational Campus in the Claremont section of the Bronx.<\/p>\n
The playground area that is used by three schools is currently made of concrete and fences.<\/p>\n
Students who play in the area spoke about their experience on the playground the way it currently is.<\/p>\n
“I feel that it’s kind of bland, you know? There’s not really anything to do,” said Jeremiah.<\/p>\n
“Everything’s just crowded and like where people play football is just like, all over the place,” shared Karla.<\/p>\n
Without any playground equipment, students are forced to get creative.<\/p>\n
Many of them play basketball without hoops, volleyball without a net and football yard lines.<\/p>\n
Renderings of the new playground include turf for a soccer field and running track, along with a basketball court and volleyball court.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sherri Warren, the principal of Kappa 215, shared how having the playground will also benefit the community.<\/p>\n
“When you estimate the total enrollment for each school throughout the day, you’re going to have close maybe 900 students out there throughout the day. But our building also serves as a hub sort of community, uses our building all the time. So other folks use the yard as well,” Warren explained.<\/p>\n
Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2028.<\/p>\n
