{"id":145338,"date":"2026-02-25T22:16:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T22:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/145338\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T22:16:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T22:16:29","slug":"harlem-renaissance-history-unearthed-amid-bronx-gravestones-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/145338\/","title":{"rendered":"Harlem renaissance history unearthed amid Bronx gravestones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">WOODLAWN, the Bronx &#8212; The Harlem Renaissance was a celebration of Black culture and creativity that gave a voice to a community long-ignored in mainstream American society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The movement, in the early 1900s, came on the backs of Black artists, doctors and community leaders who in some cases have been forgotten &#8212; until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Inside Woodlawn Cemetery where the ground is blanketed with snow, local historians have uncovered forgotten tales &#8211; often overshadowed by thousands of towering headstones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;We knew that Woodlawn was famous for many musicians, dancers, entertainers, veterans, but who are the other folks in the Harlem Renaissance that really made the Harlem community work,&#8221; asked Meg Ventrudo of the Woodlawn Conservancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Woodlawn Conservancy was able to answer that question thanks to a $50,000 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The conservancy teamed up with historians like Eric K. Washington to highlight 25 notable Black people buried there and unearth their stories from the period leading up to and during the Harlem Renaissance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">That includes people like David McDonough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;He&#8217;s credited with being Americans first Black ophthalmologist and otolaryngologist,&#8221; Washington said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Bessie Bearden is also buried there. She was a journalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;Much of what we know about the Harlem Renaissance is thanks to Bessie Bearden, from her regular columns for the Chicago Defender,&#8221; Washington said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">These narratives now have a new voice as part of the Woodlawn Conservancy&#8217;s &#8220;Where Harlem Rests&#8221; initiative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The goal of the project is to take people on a guided tour of some hidden pieces of history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;This tour will have a booklet, it will have an online component, and it will have some outdoor signage, which is something we have not yet done in Woodlawn,&#8221; Ventrudo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Well-known names like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Illinois Jacquet draw thousands of visitors to Woodlawn Cemetery each year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it paints the full picture of the Harlem community that Harlem had their own newspapers, that Harlem had their own flourist, that Harlem had their own undertakers,&#8221; Ventrudo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The work to illuminate the history only scratches the surface of the countless other stories waiting to be told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">&#8220;Maybe there&#8217;s a part two in our future,&#8221; Ventrudo said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WOODLAWN, the Bronx &#8212; The Harlem Renaissance was a celebration of Black culture and creativity that gave a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":145313,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[38],"tags":[128,9,24,44524,63,129,131,130],"class_list":{"0":"post-145338","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-the-bronx","8":"tag-bronx","9":"tag-new-york","10":"tag-new-york-city","11":"tag-no-otrc","12":"tag-nyc","13":"tag-the-bronx","14":"tag-the-bronx-headlines","15":"tag-the-bronx-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/145338","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=145338"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/145338\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/145313"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=145338"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=145338"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=145338"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
