ATLANTA \u2014 A new report finds that the Atlanta metro ranks the worst in the country for eviction rates.<\/p>\n

The Princeton-run \u201cEviction Lab\u201d found that the Atlanta metro had more total evictions than New York City.<\/p>\n

Channel 2\u2019s Michael Doudna dove into the numbers and found there were multiple complexes that averaged an eviction a day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terrible to go through. First, it\u2019s humiliating,\u201d Nursey told Doudna.<\/p>\n

Before becoming a housing advocate, Nursey lived through an eviction. He lost his job and then his home.<\/p>\n

\u201c60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. A lot of us are just one emergency away from being in a precarious housing situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But a report from Princeton\u2019s \u201cEviction Lab\u201d found Atlantans were hit harder by evictions than any other metro or state they track.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe numbers are mind-blowing in Atlanta\u201a” said Princeton\u2019s Grace Hartley.<\/p>\n

According to the report, metro Atlanta landlords filed 144,003 evictions in the past 12 months \u2014 more than all of New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich is particularly remarkable because New York City has four times the renter population than Atlanta,\u201d Hartley said. <\/p>\n

The Princeton report found that certain complexes became frequent evictors with six different complexes evicting more than 300 people in the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see all the time that there are mass evictions going on at certain properties,\u201d Nursey said.<\/p>\n

But the impact of evictions sticks with renters \u2014staying on records for seven years \u2014 making it harder to find a new home.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of the taxes of being poor, right?\u201d Nursey said.<\/p>\n

Why does metro Atlanta have such higher rates? Eviction Lab says it\u2019s our laws. <\/p>\n

Compared to cities like New York or Philadelphia, Atlanta landlords pay less to file for evictions and have to give less notice while tenants don\u2019t have guaranteed rights to council.<\/p>\n
