Tony winner Diane Paulus<\/a> chuckles at being called \u201cBroadway\u2019s Queen of Immersive Theater\u201d when talking about her latest production, a reimagined immersive version of Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019<\/a>s Broadway classic \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York City native earned her stripes with out-of-the-box revivals of \u201cHair,\u201d \u201cPippin,\u201d and \u201cThe Gershwins\u2019 Porgy and Bess<\/a>,\u201d which had the theater elite in a chokehold.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean,[in] my whole life as a director, I think about the audience, and I\u2019ve always wanted to break the fourth wall,\u201d she tells The Daily News. \u201cI just always wanted to return theater to sort of its ritual roots where the audience was a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

For \u201cMasquerade<\/a>,\u201d audience members are required to dress elegantly for a night at the Paris Opera House circa late 1800s. After entering the venue, ticket holders are fitted for a masquerade mask and given a glass of champagne before they\u2019re thrust into the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just thought of this idea of reimagining the \u2018Phantom of the Opera\u2019 in an immersive setting where you could be up close and near the singers and in the world of the backstage at the Paris Opera,\u201d Paulus shared. \u201cI think about what I want the audience to experience, and this was one I knew [that] if we could deliver this experience like an audience has never had with one of the greatest musicals ever, this could be thrilling.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University<\/a> described the completed work as an \u201cApollo mission\u201d that took about two years to bring to the stage. \u201cWe had no idea how to do it. We just had to get in there with a six floor building with an incredible company of actors and work it out\u2026 It\u2019s thrilling to pull a company of people together who want to break new ground and make theater history and do something like we\u2019ve never done before. That was exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emmy-winning<\/a> comedian Wanda Sykes<\/a> is packing a hell of a punch with her dramatic film debut in Tamika Miller<\/a>\u2019s boxing drama \u201cUndercard<\/a>.\u201d The stand up comic, writer and actress takes on the role of a problem-prone ex boxing champ and recovering alcoholic trying to make a living training young fighters. She has her sights set on her estranged son, a hot-headed, petty drug dealer with pro boxing dreams of his own, played by \u201cWhite Men Can\u2019t Jump\u201d revival<\/a> breakout Bentley Green<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d star William Stanford Davis<\/a>, Roselyn S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, Xavier Mills, Berto Col\u00f3n and Estella Kahiha round out the cast of the heartwarming redemption tale about battles fought both in and out of the ring. Think \u201cCreed\u201d meets \u201cBruised<\/a>\u201d with a touch of \u201cMoonlight<\/a>\u201d thrown into the mix. Sykes, who seems to have been holding back on dramatic work, proves she has the chops in this project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Book of Mormon<\/a>\u201d star Jasmin Richardson<\/a> has put her director\u2019s hat back on for the world premiere of \u201cThe Hula Hoopin\u2019 Queen,\u201d which is closing out the New York City Children\u2019s Theater\u2019s 29th season.<\/p>\n

The 50-minute Tia DeShazor<\/a>-scripted musical is adapted from Thelma Lynne Godin\u2019s 2014 children\u2019s book \u201cThe Hula Hoopin\u2019 Queen of 139th Street<\/a>,\u201d which follows a spunky young girl named Kameeka and her desire and determination to be crowned the winner of the hula-hoop competition in Harlem.<\/p>\n

Gabriella Scott<\/a> portrays the titular role in this uplifting, family-friendly work featuring Mya Bryant, Eliah Johnson, Arielle Roberts and Nia Simone Smith.<\/p>\n

Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way<\/a>, there are 140 garments, art pieces, accessories and textiles drawn from the college\u2019s vast permanent collection and assembled to pose the question: \u201cIs fashion art?\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the highlights of the 2026 New York International Children\u2019s Film Festival<\/a> is Celia Catunda<\/a>\u2018s charming 2-D animated feature about a 10-year-old boy who discovers his grandfather\u2019s past and the history of Japanese immigration to Brazil. Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Oscar Nakasato<\/a>, the anime-influenced \u201cMy Grandfather Is a Nihonjin\u201d presents a great entry point for youngsters (ages 8 and up) to experience the art of foreign film \u2014 subtitles and all \u2014 in a fun, and accessible way. Japanese-Brazilian illustrator Oscar Oiwa<\/a> will also be on hand for a Q&A following the 85-minute screening.<\/p>\n

The festival, co-founded by American Museum of Natural History specialist Alana Gishlick<\/a>, offer 13 features and more than 70 short films made for minors playing every weekend through March 15.<\/p>\n
