{"id":146773,"date":"2026-02-27T00:12:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T00:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/146773\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T00:12:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T00:12:26","slug":"manhattan-da-drops-assault-charge-in-washington-square-park-snowball-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/146773\/","title":{"rendered":"Manhattan DA drops assault charge in Washington Square Park snowball fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"4l6tu\">Manhattan prosecutors declined to pursue an assault charge against <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/nypd-arrests-man-in-washington-square-park-snowball-fight\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gusmane Coulibaly<\/a> on Thursday night, instead charging him with misdemeanor obstructing government administration and a harassment violation in connection with the viral Washington Square Park snowball fight.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"5re8i\">Coulibaly, 27, was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday evening and released on supervised release, hours after the NYPD <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYPDnews\/status\/2027010078302462147?s=20\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> his arrest in the case stemming from a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/snowball-gate-washington-square-park-incident-pits-mamdani-against-nypd\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">snowball fight<\/a> after Monday\u2019s blizzard. About a dozen uniformed officers sat in the courtroom along with union leadership, including Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6klrh\">Speaking to reporters after the arraignment, Hendry questioned why prosecutors did not pursue an assault charge.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"92ija\">\u201cThis was a blatant attack on the uniform that they wear so proudly every day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"aqp34\">Coulibaly was represented by defense attorney George Vomvolakis, who pushed back on that characterization.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ecmv3\">\u201cIt didn\u2019t look like an attack to me,\u201d he said, referring to video of the incident.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"11l4n\">In court, Vomvolakis argued the case amounted to, at most, a summonsable offense and asked the judge to release his client without bail. Coulibaly was ultimately released on supervised release.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"dkqi\">Police had initially said Coulibaly was arrested for allegedly assaulting officers who were struck with snow and ice during the gathering. But prosecutors did not include an assault count in the charging documents.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"tdrs\">The snowball fight, promoted on social media, drew a large crowd and a heavy police response.
