{"id":148494,"date":"2026-02-28T17:18:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T17:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/148494\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T17:18:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T17:18:07","slug":"70-of-staten-island-students-skipped-school-following-blizzard-because-of-mamdani-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/148494\/","title":{"rendered":"70% of Staten Island students skipped school following blizzard because of Mamdani policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staten Island kids learned next to nothing on Tuesday \u2014 with roughly 70% of borough students taking off the day after one of the biggest blizzards in NYC history.<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5ny.com\/news\/nyc-schools-reopen-backlash-staten-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">slammed hardest of the five boroughs <\/a>with some neighborhoods seeing nearly 30 inches of snow, causing public-school absentee rates there to skyrocket to a jaw-dropping 69.8% \u2014 more than double the same-day citywide average of 36.8%, according to city Department of Education data.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s cold-as-ice <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/23\/us-news\/nyc-schools-to-reopen-tuesday-mayor-zohran-mamdani\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decision to re-open schools<\/a> rather to switch to remote learning fueled a blizzard of backlash on <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/21\/joe-borelli-renews-bid-to-pull-staten-island-out-of-nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201cForgotten Borough,\u201d <\/a>where critics say he conveniently ignored that the borough\u2019s single rail line was out of service and underestimated the difficulty of plowing snow from its many hilly and narrow roads.<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island kids learned next to nothing on Tuesday \u2014 with roughly 70% of borough students taking off the day after one of the biggest blizzards in NYC history. Stefano Giovannini for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to go down, along with new Coke and the decision to put hydrogen in the Hindenburg instead of helium, as one of the worst decisions in history,\u201d said Councilman Frank Morano (R-Staten Island).<\/p>\n<p>The results on Staten Island were disastrous and include:<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island was slammed hardest by the recent blizzard of the five boroughs with some neighborhoods seeing nearly 30 inches of snow, causing public-school absentee rates there to skyrocket Tuesday to a jaw-dropping 69.8% \u2014 more than double the same-day citywide average of 36.8%, according to city Department of Education data. Robert Peak \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>A slew of snow banks blocking crosswalks, roads and many parking areas for school buses.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple schools reported 80\u201385% of students skipping classes.<\/p>\n<p>Special-needs schools like David Marquis School of the Arts in Great Kills were not able to safely unload students in wheelchairs from buses because of unplowed snow.<\/p>\n<p>Students at Myra S Barnes School Intermediate School 24, also in Great Kills, were briefly banished to the cafeteria because the power was out for two hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t understand how the mayor and [Schools] Chancellor [Kamar Samuelson] didn\u2019t think this wasn\u2019t a perfect day for remote learning \u2014 especially in our community, which had it much worse because we\u2019re so car dependent,\u201d Morano told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Morano and Borough President Vito Fossella \u2014 already among a long-list of pols in NYC\u2019s most conservative enclave who <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/15\/us-news\/staten-island-pols-renew-bid-to-pull-out-of-nyc-in-response-to-mamdani-winning-mayoral-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support Staten Island seceding from the Big Apple <\/a>\u2014 said the socialist mayor\u2019s decision to re-open schools shows the city\u2019s \u201cone-size-fits-all approach\u201d doesn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccity dropped the ball at the highest levels\u201d by deciding not to go remote because it forced many teachers and parents living on Staten Island and in other mass-transit deserts to drive on icy roads when keeping them safely clear should have been a priority, Fossella said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have the luxury of jumping on the subway,\u201d he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Critics say Mayor Zohran Mamdani conveniently ignored that Staten Island\u2019s single rail line was out of service before re-opening schools and underestimated the difficulty of plowing snow from its many hilly and narrow roads. Andrew Schwartz \/ SplashNews.com<\/p>\n<p>Morano said he is in the process of drafting legislation that would give boroughs more autonomy so that \u201cTuesday\u2019s disaster\u201d never repeats itself, adding he also plans to ask a City Charter Revision Commission appointed by ex-Mayor Eric Adams to examine his plan later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason Staten Island should have to live by the same rules as Manhattan and The Bronx,\u201d he said. \u201cIf Staten Islanders saw their elected or appointed leaders actually have some control over day-to-day policies, I think there would be fewer people screaming for secession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan had a 29.8% student absentee rate Tuesday, followed by Queens at 34.2%, Brooklyn at 35.1%, and the Bronx at 36.4%. That\u2019s also well above the norm, as only about 11% of the city\u2019s nearly 900,000 public school students in grades 3-K to 12 are usually absent on an average school day.<\/p>\n<p>NYC Councilman Frank Morano  (R-Staten Island) said he is in the process of drafting legislation that would give boroughs more autonomy so that \u201cTuesday\u2019s disaster\u201d never repeats itself.
