US Ambassador Mike Waltz told off an Iranian diplomat in an explosive exchange during a heated United Nations session Saturday, after the US and Israel unleashed Operation Epic Fury on Iran.<\/a><\/p>\n

The pair of diplomats traded fiery blows toward the end of the emergency United Nations Security Council meeting after Tehran accused the US of breaking international law and risking a wider regional war following Saturday morning\u2019s joint military campaign.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI advise to the representative of the United States to be polite,\u201d Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran\u2019s ambassador to the UN, brazenly charged.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be better for yourself and the country you represent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waltz shot back: \u201cThis representative sits here, in this body, representing a regime that has killed tens of thousands of its own people, and imprisoned many more, simply for wanting freedom from your entire tyranny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the meeting, Waltz insisted the US military action was lawful<\/a>, stressing Washington was acting to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and protect global security \u2013 even as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the strikes as \u201ca grave threat to international peace and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres claimed the US and Israel violated international law \u2013 and the UN Charter \u2013 by carrying out the attack and called for an immediate ceasefire.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are witnessing a grave threat to international peace and security,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me be clear, there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes,\u201d he continued, calling for an immediate return to negotiations to \u201cpull the region, and our world, back from the brink.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres also condemned Iran\u2019s retaliatory attacks for breaking the sovereignty<\/a> and territorial integrity of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia<\/a> and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Iran hit those nations as it fired missiles and drones at US bases<\/a> and facilities across the Middle East and launched counterattacks on Israel.<\/p>\n

The Israel Defense Forces also confirmed 40 top Iranian officials were killed<\/a> in the airstrikes \u2014 including the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n
