Amer submitted her notice of resignation on Feb 27. The executives have called a Special Assembly for March 3 to “formally accept the resignation and discuss next steps.”

The resignation follows a motion by Faculty Society (FacSoc) presidents to impeach Amer at a previously scheduled Special Assembly on March 13. The motion came after Amer’s presidential corporate credit card was revoked due to unauthorized personal charges totaling to $377.32. Following a review, the AMS revoked the card and set her spending to zero.

READ MORE: Assembly to consider a motion to impeach AMS President Jana Amer

Amer’s resignation wasn’t the only update shared by the AMS Executives. In their statement, they also shared that Nurzynski had intended to resign prior to learning about the impeachment motion. She informed the AMS General Manager and the AMS Executives of her plans to resign on Feb. 25, with an intended effective date of March 23.

“However, following the impeachment motion and subsequent resignation of the AMS President, she determined it was in the best interest of the Society to remain in her role to support leadership stability. She has notified the Executive and the General Manager that she no longer plans to submit a formal resignation to the Assembly. She will serve the remainder of her term until April 30, 2026.”

Both Nurzynski and Perisa claimed they remain committed to fulfilling their roles through the semester, and assured students that all AMS operations will continue without disruptions, with more updates to AMS Assembly following on March 10.

“We are proud of the many AMS successes in 2025/26 and remain committed to serving Queen’s students as we were elected to do for the remainder of our terms,” the statement read.

In an e-mail to AMS Managers from Amer on Feb. 27 at 11:02 p.m., subject-lined “Notice of Resignation-Jana Amer,” Amer reiterated her intention to resign from her role, effective March 9. She described serving as President as “the greatest honour” of her time at Queen’s.

“I entered this position with a sincere commitment to transparency, accountability, and strengthening of our student governance. Every decision I made was guided by my care and commitment to serve students with integrity and to uphold the responsibilities of this office,” the e-mail read. She later added, “Accountability extends beyond isolated decisions or situations but to the broader functioning of the Executive, and I recognize that leadership ultimately rests with me.”

She also claimed that the backlash stemming from “the situation regarding the unintentional misuse and rectification of the president’s credit card intensified in ways that have extended beyond acceptable levels of institutional or individual scrutiny.”

Amer added that she has experienced “severe harassment, including repeated spam calls to myself and members of my family, as well as threats to harm me or publicly release my home address. While I understand that being in a leadership position inevitably invites criticism, the escalation into personal safety concerns has been unbearable.”

These circumstances, she explained, made her decide thattepping down from her role would be the best move forward. She said, “The AMS deserves stability, focus and the ability to move forward with clarity and cohesion.”

While the next steps are being determined, the AMS constitution outlines them under 2.1.7 of Membership: Assembly members are required to resign in writing and only take effect once accepted by the Assembly. Until then, members remain responsible for any outstanding obligations, and their organization must find a replacement.”

“Assembly members may resign in writing, which shall be effective upon acceptance thereof by the Assembly. In the case of resignation, a member shall remain liable for payment of any assessment or other sum levied or which became payable by them to the Society prior to acceptance of their resignation,” the constitution reads.

But until further updates are provided from the two standing executives, the future of the AMS presidency remains an open question and, for now, a seat without a clear successor.

This is a developing story and will be updated with more information…

                                        Tags

AMS credit card, AMS president, AMS VPOPS, AMS VPUA, resignation

All final editorial decisions are made by the Editor(s) in Chief and/or the Managing Editor.
