Kathy Hochul, that means laying out how the state is amping up security and pressing the Trump administration for answers, while for New York\u2019s Congressional delegation it means grappling with their congressional power over the act of war and how that aligns with the president\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul was in Erie County Monday and outlined her administration\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re increasing our presence at sensitive sites, I also want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers, that you are safe here,\u201d she said, adding that with the potential for retaliatory attacks and with Monday marking the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Purim: \u201cI directed that my intelligence communities, cyber experts here in New York coordinate with local law enforcement as well as federal law enforcement to make sure we\u2019re doing everything we can to keep locations secure, whether it\u2019s places of worship for the Jewish communities, or places of worship for the Muslim communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the strikes themselves, the governor offered a measured response to the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis regime has been abhorrent for decades. It oppresses its own people, it supports terrorism, it threatens our allies and pursues dangerous ambitions,\u201d she said. \u201cNo one is ever going to defend that regime\u00a0\u2014 full stop. But the scale of what is happening now demands answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul, like many others, asked Trump for clarity on his\u00a0long-term\u00a0plan, as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/us\/snplus\/politics\/2026\/03\/02\/trump-attacks-last-best-chance-to-strike-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">president warned Americans Monday<\/a>\u00a0that the conflict could last several weeks and\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0rule out troops on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the\u00a0objective? Is this going to turn into boots on the ground and the time of the endless wars that Americans are so tired of?\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said. \u201cThe president\u2019s own words on Election Day, he said no more\u00a0wars,\u00a0so we have a lot of questions and deserve answers and ultimately what does success look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Washington,\u00a0New York\u2019s congressional delegation is also\u00a0facing\u00a0the question of what the future of the conflict will look like, and their power to shape it.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as the debate continues over a war powers resolution which would require congressional approval for further military action.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Congressman John Mannion of Syracuse stressed his support for U.S.\u00a0troops involved in the war,\u00a0but also the resolution as he, like Hochul, questions the administration\u2019s next move.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to such serious actions that are easy to start but maybe difficult to end, we should be deliberative, and we should consult and engage with\u00a0Congress\u00a0because that\u2019s where the war powers are enshrined in the U.S.\u00a0Constitution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy of Western New York defended the Trump\u00a0administration,\u00a0telling reporters that lawmakers on Capitol Hill are expecting a congressional briefing and are within the\u00a060-day\u00a0window which\u00a0is\u00a0required\u00a0for actions without congressional approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have access to the same information.\u00a0Once\u00a0we receive the\u00a0briefing,\u00a0we will know precisely what the lead up to this is.\u00a0I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think this is a decision the\u00a0president came to flippantly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Langworthy joined other Republicans calling on Democrats to back down in the standoff over funding Department of Homeland Security,\u00a0tied to the Trump\u00a0administration\u2019s immigration crackdown, given the risks surrounding the situation in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an accident waiting to happen, and to have our DHS and the DHS personnel working without pay or\u00a0furloughed\u00a0is absolutely unacceptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Langworthy\u00a0or\u00a0Mannion expressed support for the idea of regime change in Iran.\u00a0Mannion said that\u2019s part of why it is so important to understand what the administration\u2019s plan and\u00a0objectives\u00a0are moving forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York\u2019s leaders are grappling with the implications of the ongoing conflict in Iran.
