New York (WBNG) – New York State Police and Gov. Kathy Hochul are responding to public safety concerns following a U.S. military attack on Iran that began Saturday. <\/p>\n
U.S. military officials said the strike hit more than 1,000 targets within the first 24 hours. Six American soldiers have died overseas. <\/p>\n
Hochul has directed state intelligence and resources to secure sensitive sites and locations during the ongoing attacks.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether it\u2019s places of worship for the Jewish communities, whether it\u2019s places of worship for the Muslim communities, or any place of gathering, what we think could be under threat. So we\u2019re increasing our presence at sensitive sites,\u201d Hochul said.<\/p>\n
Trooper Aga Tinker, public information officer for New York State Police Troop C, said the agency remains focused on community security.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe New York State Police continues to remain vigilant and committed to the security of people in our communities,\u201d Tinker said.<\/p>\n
Tinker said her advice to the public centers on awareness. <\/p>\n
\u201cBiggest thing is, if you see something, say something. It is very important to let the public remain vigilant about their surroundings. You see something that is a little weird or a little suspicious, don\u2019t hesitate and just call local law enforcement or 911,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Tinker also addressed concerns about hate or retaliation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will continue to ensure that you belong here and that you feel that the State of New York is doing everything we can to protect you. We\u2019ll not tolerate any hate or retaliation against anyone who calls New York home because of what\u2019s happening,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Rabbi Levi Slonim, a Chabad rabbi, said his community is maintaining its regular schedule.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have always been in a state of making sure to keep everything safe and secure. But, at the same time, there is no reason for panic. We are continuing with all of our programs and events as scheduled,\u201d Slonim said.<\/p>\n
Officials said residents may notice an increase in police presence in their area. They said the increased visibility is intended to show community members that law enforcement is available to help.<\/p>\n
12 News reached out to several Islamic organizations in the Southern Tier. They did not comment.<\/p>\n
