<\/p>\nAn 18-year-old robbery suspect is hospitalized with critical injuries after being shot by police Thursday night in the Bronx.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The NYPD says an officer also suffered a serious head injury while struggling to make the arrest.<\/p>\n
It all went down just after 9 p.m. in the Williamsbridge section of the borough.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Police respond to 911 call for robbery in progress<\/p>\n
Police said officers responded to a call from a man who claimed his son had robbed his own mother and older brother at gunpoint at an apartment on East Gun Hill Road.<\/p>\n
When the officers and the father arrived on the scene, they heard three gunshots ring out inside the apartment before the suspect opened the front door, police said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Investigators said the suspect fled when he encountered the officers in the hallway. That’s when the struggle ensued.<\/p>\n
Police sources told CBS News New York one officer fell backward and hit his head. Another officer fired his gun and hit the suspect twice — once in the lower back and once in the right arm.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Our cops walked into a very dangerous domestic situation where they did not know what was on the other side of that door,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said. “Thankfully, our officers were able to apprehend the suspect, and our injured officer is expected to make a full recovery.” <\/p>\n
Neighbors shaken by dramatic scene<\/p>\n
A neighbor who lives in the building said he and his wife heard the commotion from their apartment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“It’s crazy, honestly. It’s not settling to live here knowing that. I live here with my kid and my wife, it’s scary,” said the man.<\/p>\n
Police released a photo of a gun they said was recovered from inside a bag belonging to the suspect. Police said they also found shell casings and ballistic damage to a window inside the apartment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
