That\u2019s one question a new online exhibit from the city\u2019s Department of Records &amp; Information Services (DORIS) explores. Featuring more than 100 items from the city\u2019s archival and library collections, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/remembernyc.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">NYC\u2019s Story: The City on Record<\/a>\u201d uses government records that reveal the 400 years of NYC history, from documents showing land transfers in 17th-century Queens to a 2025 primary election ballot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"759\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/NYC400_002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-233755\"  \/>An Indian Village of the Manhattans, 1859 depiction. How was NYC built? What Makes NYC, NYC?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA team of DORIS employees combed through centuries of government records to pull unique items that shed light on the origin, growth and population of New York City,\u201d Pauline Toole, commissioner of DORIS, said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cExploring records above the diverse residents of the City, how it was built, and what makes it unique provides insight on the struggles and successes of the past and how best to move forward together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1040\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/NYC400_062-1040x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-233757\"  \/>Little Italy storefronts, 1930.
