{"id":152236,"date":"2026-03-04T10:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T10:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/152236\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T10:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T10:09:08","slug":"cornell-political-union-hosts-curtis-sliwa-former-republican-nominee-for-nyc-mayor-for-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/152236\/","title":{"rendered":"Cornell Political Union Hosts Curtis Sliwa, Former Republican Nominee for NYC Mayor, For Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpoliticalunion.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cornell Political Union<\/a> hosted a debate which featured Curtis Sliwa, two-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sliwafornyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Republican nominee<\/a> for mayor of New York City and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianangels.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian Angels<\/a> on Tuesday evening. Over 125 students attended the event at Anabel Taylor Hall Chapel to hear Sliwa and the debaters speak.<\/p>\n<p>Debaters were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVaAlwIDHtZ\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">given<\/a> the resolution, \u201ccommunity over government\u201d to address. Sliwa, who CPU invited as a guest speaker, provided opening remarks before the debate in agreement with the resolution. The debate was open to all students to attend, and the debate floor was open to CPU members only.<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/31\/nyregion\/curtis-sliwa-red-beret.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">donning<\/a> his staple red beret, was greeted by a thunderous applause upon entering the chapel and giving his opening speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst off, let\u2019s get the rules straight,\u201d Sliwa said to the crowd. \u201cYou can\u2019t be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/campaign-2026\/user-clip-dont-be-glazing-me\/5176674\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glazing<\/a> me tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Going on to voice his support for the resolution, Sliwa emphasized the importance of community organization, which he regarded as more proactive than government involvement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re just going to wait for the government, they&#8217;re going to be a dollar short and a day late,\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n<p>He then called on the audience to take action to improve their communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m a doer, not just a talker, and that is what each and every one of you should be,\u201d Sliwa said. He also implored the audience to question authority and the government, saying \u201cWe need to be curious. First and foremost curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, founded the Guardian Angels, a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to crime prevention, in 1979 in response to rising crime and violence rates in New York City, according to its website. The organization now spans 14 countries and over 130 cities, specializing in safety-patrols, self-defense training and homeless outreach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8b2cc312-a8b4-4d47-81b7-960e9518a911.sized-1000x1000.jpg\" alt=\"Sliwa Interacts with fan\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>\n            A fan offers his red beret for Sliwa to sign.\n        <\/p>\n<p>He continued his community outreach efforts by running for mayor of New York City in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/eric-adams-defeats-curtis-sliwa-nyc-mayoral-race-1645118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2021<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.npr.org\/2025-election-results\/new-york.html?section=M\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">again<\/a> in 2025. Although Sliwa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/04\/nx-s1-5597788\/election-results-zohran-mamdani-new-york-city-mayor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received<\/a> only 7% of the vote, his campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/the-internets-new-babygirl-is-curtis-sliwa?srsltid=AfmBOooMzr-gyljUY83Qf2rwUwUdpqsfNkAIOnKptGy8m-Xbr78Qn8AR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received<\/a> a wave of support from Gen-Z on social media. He stuck through the election, in spite of several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/the-lede\/inside-curtis-sliwas-never-ending-campaign\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calls<\/a> to drop out of the race, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nyc-mayoral-race-trump-mamdani-adams-sliwa-33de479170013f9fc3c35c377096f39c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disapproval<\/a> from President Donald Trump and alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2025\/09\/25\/sliwa-cuomo-billionaires-mayors-race-bribes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bribes<\/a> from several billionaires to step down. Some Cornell students previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellsun.com\/article\/2025\/10\/hallmark-of-democracy-new-yorker-cornellians-react-to-the-final-nyc-mayoral-debate-ahead-of-nov-4-election\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commented<\/a> on the 2025 mayoral race calling Sliwa \u201cquite entertaining\u201d and \u201cthe realest New Yorker [in the race].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his opening remarks, Sliwa also pointed out times in which he said the federal government has failed to act in the interests of its citizens, pointing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-lebanon-march-04-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war in Iran<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn0ekjnkj54o\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bombed<\/a> Iran on Saturday, nearly 800 people have been <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-lebanon-march-04-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed<\/a> in Iran, 50 in Lebanon, 11 in Israel and six U.S. service members in Kuwait, in a series of attacks between the U.S. and Israel and Iran. Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/why-us-attack-iran-trump-administration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">given<\/a> various justifications for the war, including preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and preventing Iran from funding proxy terrorist groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy? Can I ask, why? What the hell did they do over there at this point in our history, to deserve what we&#8217;re doing to them at this particular moment? This is insanity\u201d Sliwa said, followed by a roar of applause from the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He concluded his speech by encouraging students to \u201cfollow your principles, not the principle of your bank account, the principles of your belief. \u2026 Use the great education you&#8217;re getting now to make a difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa\u2019s speech preceded the CPU debate, which started with two four-minute speeches, one given by Sun opinion columnist Leo Glasgow \u201926 in the proposition, or in support of the resolution, and another given by Admir Cekic \u201926 in opposition of the resolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glasgow began his remarks by thanking the members of his community who got him to where he is today. He gave a shout out to his middle school, his music teacher, his building\u2019s superintendent, all to point to the benefits of community, and then warned against when a government can isolate individuals from their community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo let me end by saying shoutout to my mom,&#8221; Glasgow said to the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Cekic opened by pointing to the Founding Fathers and the Constitution, explaining that the government should come before community because the purpose of the government is to serve and work for the people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica is a nation composed of many communities,\u201d Cekic said. He added that the government serves to protect these several communities, so they can exist in harmony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the opening speeches, the floor opened to debate amongst CPU members. Several members spoke, taking a variety of stances.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/0e491b81-fb65-4237-a36a-2b439e450437.sized-1000x1000.jpg\" alt=\"A student speaks in front of Sliwa\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>A student speaks while Sliwa and the crowd watches.<\/p>\n<p>Max Troiano \u201928 argued in favor of the government over community, emphasizing the role of the government in protecting its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA beautiful community cannot prevent a war in Iran,\u201d Troiano said. \u201cA beautiful community cannot defend itself, and for that, we need a government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sofia Etlin \u201926 warned against the government&#8217;s potential overreach in its authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook around, we are told we are freer than ever, and yet we are more managed than any generation in history,\u201d Etlin said, \u201cTo who do we pledge allegiance to? \u2026 A state that will send us to Vietnam, to Iraq, [to] Iran. A state that will take away our healthcare. Tax us, but not billionaires. \u2026 I pledge allegiance to you, and to my community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the debate, Sliwa made closing remarks, thanking students for engaging in a debate that encouraged a variety of viewpoints.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrying to collaborate and come together with people of different points of view can be a very difficult thing to do,\u201d Sliwa said. \u201cYou swim in a sea of negativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To conclude the debate, CPU members held a vote on the resolution, rejecting it in a 16 to 19 vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the debate, CPU members hosted a reception with Sliwa at Okenshields. Sliwa ate rice and vegetables during the reception and told The Sun that he \u201cenjoyed [the food] and that\u2019s why I had a second helping.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa\u2019s message left a lasting impression on several audience members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was refreshing how much he did not care for establishment figures, how much he stuck to his guns,\u201d said attendee Billy Stammer \u201928.<\/p>\n<p>Attendee David Rha \u201926 was also impressed by Sliwa\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s obviously a risk with a candidate like him, entering a very sort of typically perceived liberal space as Cornell University, but I think that his speech was, overall, incredibly compelling,\u201d Rha said.<\/p>\n<p>An overarching message that Sliwa imparted on the audience throughout the event is that they should try to make a difference in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is going to be the mark that you leave on Mother Earth?\u201d Sliwa asked the audience during his remarks. \u201cYou come in with nothing, you go out with nothing.
