{"id":152725,"date":"2026-03-04T19:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T19:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/152725\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T19:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T19:01:08","slug":"no-cuts-no-fees-no-corporate-universities-students-stage-mass-protest-over-ford-governments-osap-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/152725\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;No cuts, no fees, no corporate universities&#8217;: Students stage mass protest over Ford government\u2019s OSAP cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students across the province are protesting recent changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) \u2014 the post-secondary financial aid system will go from a majority grant structure to a majority loan structure in the new school year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of students rallied outside Queen&#8217;s Park in Toronto, while hundreds more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/kitchener-waterloo\/university-waterloo-rally-osap-cuts-queens-park-protest-9.7114129\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walked out of class in Waterloo<\/a> in protest. Earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/students-plan-walkout-rally-against-osap-cuts-9.7110511\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high school students in Oshawa<\/a> also led a walkout. <\/p>\n<p>Toronto protesters chanted and banged drums in unison, calling for Premier Doug Ford and Colleges and University Minister Nolan Quinn to resign and take their \u201chands off\u201d post-secondary education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo cuts, no fees, no corporate universities,\u201d yelled Toronto demonstrators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are distraught, but we are not willing to settle for the conditions that this government has manufactured,\u201d said Omar Mousa with the Canadian Federation of Students\u2013Ontario (CFS-Ontario) at the rally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Education should not be another financial burden on students already facing insecurity with rising costs for food and rent, said Cyrielle Ngeleka with CFS-Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation should be a pathway out of precarity, not another bill students are expected to absorb,\u201d she said, adding teachers, community workers and parents had also joined student protesters in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-college-university-funding-osap-9.7086776\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Last month<\/a>, Quinn announced a new $6.4-billion funding model over four years, which included an end to a years-long tuition freeze and the OSAP changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WATCH | High school students in Oshawa walked out to &#8216;save OSAP&#8217;:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1772650867_114_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">\u2018Save OSAP\u2019: Oshawa high school students protest Ford\u2019s cut<\/p>\n<p>Students from over 20 schools across Durham Region held walkouts in protest of changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program on Monday. CBC\u2019s Christian D&#8217;Avino spoke to students who say the reductions to grant money put their futures in jeopardy. <\/p>\n<p>Currently, students can receive a maximum of 85 per cent as grants \u2014 which do not have to be repaid \u2014 and a minimum of 15 per cent as loans that need to be paid back.<\/p>\n<p>But in the new year, OSAP funding for eligible students will be reduced to a maximum of 25 per cent for grants, with funding for loans increased to a minimum of 75 per cent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike so many young Ontario students, I feel disappointed and at a loss of control for what the Ford government has decided to do with OSAP,\u201d University of Toronto student Naicey Portus told CBC Radio\u2019s Metro Morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said she\u2019ll be among the crowds of students outside Queen\u2019s Park at the \u201cHands Off Our Education!\u201d protest.<\/p>\n<p>On top of exams and assignments, Portus says she\u2019ll now have to worry about money and working more to make up for the changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is affecting those who already have barriers that they&#8217;re facing, and so to make those walls even higher for those students is really disappointing to see,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBC News reached out to the province for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Closeup of student protestor with a sign.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1772650867_536_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4999086424264572\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Across the province, including at Queen&#8217;s Park in Toronto, hundreds of students staged protests and walkouts to demand cuts to OSAP be reversed. (Evan Mitsui\/CBC)Students in &#8216;limbo&#8217; due to OSAP uncertainty: professor<\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/osap-cuts-what-you-need-to-know-9.7106144\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changes to OSAP aren\u2019t that straight forward<\/a>, said Danny Corral, assistant professor at the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>He said the program is funded by both the province and federal government, but the new cuts will only affect the provincial portion of OSAP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Up to 60 per cent of OSAP funding comes from the federal government, according to Employment and Social Development Canada. That means OSAP changes will affect about 40 per cent of the funding that comes from the province.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are really in a state of limbo, so to speak, in terms of really understanding how this is exactly going to impact them,\u201d said Corral.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LISTEN | Western University students share how OSAP changes will impact them:<\/p>\n<p>London Morning7:572 local university students explain how OSAP changes will affect them<\/p>\n<p>Students are rallying against Ford&#8217;s changes to OSAP, including cuts to OSAP and a reduction of grants. Western University students Brooklin Begg and Amrithaa Logeswaran told London Morning how this will affect their budgets and choice to pursue post-secondary education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said the province has an aid estimator tool to help students see how much they might receive in grants versus loans, but that tool has yet to be updated since the announced changes. <\/p>\n<p>The ministry of education has said that it will be updated sometime this spring.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully these protests continue to demonstrate that students are stressed, students are angry \u2026 because of the real impact that these policy changes are going to have on their futures,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Corral encouraged students to keep pushing for answers and to stay on top of updates from the province in the months ahead. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Student holds a sign at an OSAP rally in front of Queen's Park. \"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1772650868_209_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Students and politicians at the rally said the cuts to OSAP come at a time when families are already struggling with an affordability crisis. (Evan Mitsui\/CBC)Province &#8216;lit a match&#8217; against students, families: Fraser<\/p>\n<p>Putting more financial pressure on students and their families during an affordability crisis is the wrong thing to do, Ontario Liberal education critic John Fraser told CBC Toronto at the rally. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just the government against students.
