Jennifer Scott<\/a>, who helped take the Black-owned popup skating rink Roller Wave NYC<\/a> to the next level in 2023, is on a roll with her latest endeavor: 4WRD Roller Skate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Brooklyn-based mobile roller skating organization recently partnered with the Brooklyn Children\u2019s Museum<\/a> to transport its rooftop terrace into a destination where the entire family can skate their hearts out.<\/p>\n

On the first Friday afternoon of every month, a personalized team of experienced instructors are assembled to teach the entire family how to find their rhythm, learn their balance and glide in stride.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis partnership allows me to bring the skating methodology we\u2019ve developed in public schools into a trusted cultural space,\u201d she told The Daily News on Monday.\u00a0 \u201cIt elevates roller skating and increases visibility for the sport and helps build momentum toward its Olympic future.\u201d<\/p>\n

East New York<\/a>-raised Scott shared that last month\u2019s kickoff<\/a> was a success: \u201cThe response was overwhelmingly positive\u2026 the parents appreciated our thoughtful approach to teaching kids how to skate.\u201d<\/p>\n

People old and young from every skill set can partake in the activity. Admission includes access to all of the necessary equipment, including rental skates, helmets, skate trainers and wrist guards.<\/p>\n

Scott added: \u201cThis movement is medicine. Through what I call \u2018gentle athletics,\u2019 we build confidence because confident kids become confident adults, both on and off the rink.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blending her brew of observational humor with personal reflections on family, culture and everyday life, the Mexican-American comic has fresh material that reflects on adulthood and self-discovery for her latest show.<\/p>\n

The acclaimed collaboration between London cabaret star Le Gateau Chocolat<\/a> and comedian Adrienne Truscott<\/a> makes its New York premiere for a strictly-limited engagement. The comedic romp \u2014 described by Chocolat as \u201ca throughline that connects Puccini\u2019s \u201cMadame Butterfly,\u201d \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d<\/a>, \u201cAnnie\u201d and Radiohead\u201d \u2014 explores the real-life decades-long friendship between the white American comedian and the Black Nigerian-English drag performer.<\/p>\n

Truscott, who co-created the work, referred to \u201cGrey Arias<\/a>\u201d as \u201ca little bit downtown and a little bit Broadway\u201d that\u2019s perfect for the New York City theater scene: \u201cIt\u2019s sophisticated, and queer and twisty and drag-y and a bit triggering, but also has a bonkers, fun finale, which is, you know, sometimes rare in downtown theater!\u201d<\/p>\n

Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, is being celebrated by the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Prospect Park Alliance<\/a> and Mixed Masala<\/a> with a fun afternoon featuring live music performances led by Indofunk Satish<\/a>, storytelling and Rangoli artmaking.<\/p>\n

Pigment powder packets will be available for sale so the entire family can get fully rainbowed in the festival\u2019s traditional throwing of colors. There will be a bonfire and a parade to the Lincoln Road Playground<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s still a little more time to take a look at LGBTQ+ culture\u2019s impact on The Harlem Renaissance with the must-see exhibition curated by Allison Robinson, Ph.D<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Household names like the writer Langston Hughes, poet Countee Cullen<\/a>, and blues singers Ma Rainey<\/a> and Ethel Waters are featured throughout the more than 200 objects, but there are other noteworthy representations through paintings, sculptures, photographs, books, documents and musical recordings.<\/p>\n

The expansive collection also includes Richmond Barth\u00e9<\/a>\u2018s sculpture of singer and nightclub owner Jimmie Daniels, James Van Der Zee<\/a>\u2018s 1926 Gelatin silver print \u201cPerson in a Fur-Trimmed Ensemble,\u201d William L\u2019Engle\u2019s 1928 watercolor painting \u201cHarlem,\u201d and a famous photograph of drag king pioneer Gladys Bentley<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Gay Harlem Renaissance shows that Black LGBTQ+ life was far more visible, accepted, and integrated into the daily life of 1920s Harlem than most people imagine,\u201d chief historian George Chauncey<\/a> said of the show. \u201cThe exhibition takes visitors to the basement speakeasies, rent parties, and drag balls where ordinary queer and straight people built lives together, as well as to the salons of the cultural elite.\u201d<\/p>\n

A chocolate lover\u2019s dream returns this year in a new venue with events including a star-studded culinary lineup headlined by \u201cTop Chef<\/a>\u201d judge Gail Simmons<\/a> and life-sized, wearable gowns made entirely of chocolate.
