With the new league year approaching for the NFL<\/a>, teams have to make decisions on pending free agents. This plays a factor in their future external acquisitions as well.<\/p>\n

The New York Jets are set to release some key players, but also try to re-sign some free agents. They made a surprising decision with a recently acquired wide receiver.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate the Jets have declined to tender John Metchie III. This comes a year after they acquired him in a trade with the Houston Texans.<\/p>\n

Metchie was one of the few bright spots on the entire Jets roster. His tender also likely would have been a very reasonable salary.<\/p>\n

Instead, the Jets continue to make questionable decisions. Head coach Aaron Glenn has now turned over his entire coaching staff and most of his starting offense.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not uncommon to make high turnover decisions, but to decline an affordable tender on a young receiver you traded for\u2026 makes for more questions than answers.<\/p>\n

Metchie, a restricted free agent for the Jets, will now be an unrestricted free agent. The Jets can\u2019t be compensated if he departs because they declined to tender him.<\/p>\n

Metchie is only 25 years old and is now almost four years removed from his initial acute promyelocytic leukemia diagnosis. In the right environment, Metchie can thrive.<\/p>\n

He was in crowded rooms in Houston and Philadelphia. Joining an inept Jets offense certainly isn\u2019t helping him\u2013though he remained one of the few good things going for that unit.<\/p>\n
