New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino was charged with disorderly behavior by the City Council Ethics Committee on March 3 for Islamophobic tweets she posted on social media.<\/p>\n

New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino is once again in the hot seat as the City Council Ethics Committee<\/a> charged her with disorderly behavior on March 3 for Islamophobic tweets she posted on her X account, one of which<\/a> was directed at Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s chief immigration officer appointee, Faiza N. Ali.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew York is under foreign occupation. There\u2019s really no other way to put it,\u201d Paladino\u2019s post responding to the appointment on Feb. 17 said. \u201cDoes this administration have one single actual American in it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ali, a hijabi woman and pro-Palestinian activist, was born in Brooklyn and is an American citizen.

\u201cThe Committee on Rules, Privileges, Elections, Standards, and Ethics met on Monday and voted to charge Council Member Paladino with engaging in disorderly behavior and violating the Council\u2019s Anti-Harassment and Discrimination Policy,\u201d a spokesperson from the City Council wrote to QNS on Thursday. \u201cThe charge was based on Council Member Paladino\u2019s conduct on social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paladino \u2014 a Republican representing District 19 communities including Whitestone<\/a>, College Point<\/a>, Bayside<\/a>, Little Neck<\/a>, Douglaston<\/a> and parts of North Flushing<\/a> \u2014 is given five days from the date charges were brought forward, March 3, to provide a written response.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She will then be scheduled in the coming weeks to appear before the committee in executive session.\n<\/p>\n

According to council rules, disciplinary actions can vary, including censure, fines, removal of privileges, mandatory training, suspension or expulsion.\n<\/p>\n

The disciplinary process will be conducted by the nine member committee and would need to be approved two-thirds of the 52-member City Council.\n<\/p>\n

Paladino\u2019s team has not responded to QNS\u2019s request for further comment as of press time, but the councilwoman responded to the charges Tuesday evening on X<\/a>, calling them an \u201cunconstitutional scheme to violate [her] first amendment rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

She referred to her comments on social media as \u201cpolitical discourse in the public square\u201d and claimed they were protected by the Constitution.

However, an ACLU fact sheet<\/a> points out that the Constitution does not protect speech constituted as harassment, incitement, true threats or fighting words.<\/p>\n

The ethics committee is specifically charging Paladino with harassment and discrimination.\n<\/p>\n

Paladino is known for her incendiary posts on social media, which have targeted Muslims and other minority communities in the past.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

In May 2024<\/a>, she referred to students on college campuses protesting Israel bombing on Gaza as \u201cmonsters\u201d and calling to \u201cslay\u201d them.<\/p>\n

She also called for Mamdani, a naturalized American citizen since 2018, to be deported this past June<\/a>, and was kicked off the Council\u2019s Committee on Mental Health, Disabilities and Addiction in May 2023<\/a> after claiming Drag Story Hour NYC was \u201cgrooming\u201d children and exposing them to \u201csexual content.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda Sarsour, a mentor and supporter of Mamdani\u2019s mayoral campaign, called out Paladino in December for a tweet the councilwoman posted calling for the denaturalization and \u201cexpulsion of Muslims from western nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paladino\u2019s tweet was in response to the antisemitic mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia during a Hanukkah celebration.\u00a0

Users have since pointed out the irony that Ahmed al-Ahmed, a Muslim Australian citizen, helped detain the shooters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome to the NYC Council,\u201d Sarsour wrote on Facebook on Dec. 15. \u201cAnyone working on censuring this woman or stripping her of any committee positions or is that only for Muslim women?\u201d<\/p>\n

Paladino has also accused popular Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, a Muslim man who covers leftist politics on the platform, of \u201ctelling his followers to make suicide drones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Piker swiftly responded to Paladino\u2019s accusations on X<\/a> saying, \u201cbe on the lookout for a defamation suit councilwoman!\u201d just hours before she posted in response to the ethics committee charges.<\/p>\n
