MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – Fake Patty\u2019s Day, one of Manhattan\u2019s biggest and most dangerous party days of the year, is this Saturday.<\/p>\n
Riley County Police Department says it\u2019s gearing up.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have extra personnel, we\u2019re able to move around a little bit of our assignments so that we have the majority of our agency working that day,\u201d RCPD Lt. Dustin Weiszbrod said. \u201cSo we divvied out those assignments this week and the officers are prepared for the day Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n
The police department is just one of the groups strengthening its numbers in preparation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they\u2019ve got, say 25 employees working, 15, 18 of them are going to be running security,\u201d Aggieville Business Association Executive Director Dennis Cook said. \u201cThe rest of them are the ones who are serving the customers.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI tell my staff it\u2019s like our Super Bowl,\u201d Johnny Kaw\u2019s General Manager Jake Quinn said. \u201cWe\u2019ve trained for this, we\u2019ve corrected our operations, we\u2019ve updated our operations and systems and procedures to allow us to operate with this many people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kansas State University students typically spend the day drinking and drifting throughout different neighborhoods.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just have a bunch of guys constantly driving around making sure everyone\u2019 being safe,\u201d KSU Sigma Chi member Noah Brueggemann said. \u201cEveryone\u2019s being not too crazy, everyone\u2019s supposed to keep themselves under control as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
RCPD says it prefers crowds head downtown instead, and the district\u2019s business owners agree it\u2019s the safer place to be.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the best place to be and you know what you\u2019re going to get,\u201d Cook said. \u201cWhereas if you\u2019re in the neighborhoods, you don\u2019t know whose property that you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re able to oversee this event if we centralize it a lot easier,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cWe\u2019re able to, you know, keep these safety issues from happening. We\u2019re able to see everything in a smaller, confined area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lt. Weiszbrod urges anyone joining in on Fake Patty\u2019s celebrations to avoid driving under the influence. He also notes the city has various ride share and public transportation options available.<\/p>\n
