NEW YORK, NY\u2014 Manhattan’s 14th Street, operating as the borough’s only busway since 2019, will undergo significant upgrades for pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders. <\/p>\n
City officials announced Monday that planning will begin for the corridor’s first major redesign since most car traffic was restricted. <\/p>\n
The current regulations allow only buses, trucks, and emergency vehicles to drive along most of the street from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.<\/p>\n
Since its implementation, the 14th Street busway has served as a model for bus improvements across New York City. Following the changes, traffic congestion on the street nearly disappeared, and bus speeds improved by 24 percent, increasing from approximately 5 mph to 6 mph.<\/p>\n
The City plans to install dedicated bike lanes, enhance bus stops, and expand pedestrian space along 14th Street. Improvements are also slated for neighboring blocks. While an exact design has not been finalized, officials confirmed they will proceed with a two-year study previously funded under former Mayor Eric Adams.<\/p>\n
“This process will deliver truly transformational, permanently constructed upgrades for the corridor that capitalize on the benefits of the busway and create a world-class street from river to river,”DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said<\/p>\n
The project has secured $9.5 million in funding through efforts by the City Council and former Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.<\/p>\n
Future plans are expected to incorporate proposals from the Union Square Partnership. <\/p>\n
These proposals envision a 33 percent increase in public space around Union Square, including double the sidewalk space, containerized trash bins, and fixed bollards to separate traffic from pedestrians. The transportation department will host a series of public workshops to gather community feedback on the redesign.<\/p>\n
