A former rival of New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial nominee Mikie Sherrill<\/a> said Thursday it\u2019s \u201cfair\u201d to demand she release her military disciplinary records to provide a firm answer once and for all about her potential involvement in a cheating scandal at the US Naval Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that Democrats need to be careful. I mean, at the same time that they were saying, \u2018Release the Epstein files,\u2019 they\u2019re saying, \u2018Don\u2019t release the files in defending Mikie,’\u201d Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop told reporter David Cruz on his \u201cHold That Thought \u2026\u201d podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s probably validity for the fact that if we\u2019re being transparent on everything, just be transparent on everything,\u201d continued Fulop, who finished a distant third behind Sherrill and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in the June 10 Democratic primary<\/a>. \u201cAnd there probably is more to explore in that military component. That\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherrill has faced pressure to divulge her full disciplinary records after the New Jersey Globe<\/a> revealed in late September that she was barred from walking at her Annapolis commencement in 1994. <\/p>\n

Initially, the four-term congresswoman claimed that she was barred from walking because she \u201cdidn\u2019t turn in some of my classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a test at the school that was stolen. I did not realize that it was stolen. I took the test. Afterwards, I knew what the rumor mill was. I knew people who were implicated in it. I didn\u2019t come forward with that information,\u201d the 53-year-old\u00a0explained at an event<\/a>\u00a0the day after the story broke.<\/p>\n

However, Sherill later appeared to change her story<\/a>, revealing that she spoke to academy investigators and \u201ctold them what I knew\u201d \u2014 raising questions about what she revealed and why she was penalized.<\/p>\n

Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli has repeatedly called for Sherrill to approve the release of her disciplinary records, only for the Democrat to repeatedly beg off \u2014 even telling the Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a> editorial board in a sitdown earlier this month that she was \u201cnot even sure what that would look like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a big thing that took place at the school, and so there\u2019s hundreds of files and hundreds of interviews and stuff like that,\u201d she argued.<\/p>\n

Polls show Sherrill and Ciattarelli in a tight race to replace term-limited Democrat Phil Murphy as governor. No Republican has won a Garden State gubernatorial election since Chris Christie won a second term in 2013.<\/p>\n

Carly Jones, a spokesperson for the Sherill campaign, shrugged off Fulop\u2019s criticisms.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last 11 days of this campaign, Mikie Sherrill is laser focused on earning every vote across New Jersey,\u201d Jones told The Post. \u201cWhile Jack Ciattarelli crashes out, and political insiders focus on punditry, Mikie\u2019s running hard to deliver a big win on November 4 so she can get right to work lowering costs, taking care of our kids, and bringing accountability to Trenton.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday\u2019s podcast, Fulop revealed to Cruz that he had not spoken to Sherrill since the Democratic primary, though he had received a call from Ciattarelli.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it speaks to the fact that he is very, very effective on relationships in retail politics,\u201d Fulop said, later adding that \u201cit is the responsibility always of the stronger to reach out to the weaker. She is the standard-bearer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do what I\u2019m asked to do, which is nothing. And so I\u2019m okay with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The outgoing mayor also resurrected one of his critiques of the congresswoman from the campaign, saying: \u201cIf you\u2019re light on policy and can\u2019t create a clear vision, you can have headwinds, and that became true.\u201d<\/p>\n
