The wife of New York City Mayor\u00a0Zohran <\/a>Mamdani <\/a>has gotten a pass from much of the media after reports that she liked social media posts celebrating the Oct. 7 massacre of Israelis carried out by Hamas.<\/p>\n

Rama Duwaji, a Houston-born illustrator who identifies as Syrian and married Mamdani in early 2025, liked several posts in the immediate aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that were critical of Israel,\u00a0Jewish Insider<\/a>\u00a0first reported. Duwaji also liked a February 2024 Instagram post claiming The New York Times\u2019 investigation into sexual violence during the Oct. 7 attack was \u201cfabricated,\u201d according to\u00a0The Free Press.<\/a><\/p>\n

The reports sparked immediate and intense backlash toward the socialist mayor from conservatives and pro-Israel accounts on social media<\/a>, but much of the mainstream media has downplayed the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

SOCIAL MEDIA ERUPTS ON MAMDANI OVER REPORTS HIS WIFE LIKED PRO-OCTOBER 7TH POSTS: \u2018THIS IS WHO THEY ARE\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

NBC 4 New York\u2019s report <\/a>stressed<\/a> that it occurred \u201calmost a year and a half before she married Mamdani\u201d and that \u201croughly 35,000 other accounts also liked that same post.\u201d Vanity Fair made sure to note that she is \u201cnot\u201d a Hamas sympathizer in parentheses immediately after noting<\/a> that many have claimed Duwaji does sympathize with the terror group.\u00a0<\/p>\n

MS NOW did not mention Rama Duwaji by name from the time the Jewish Insider report came out on Friday through Monday afternoon, according to a search of transcripts using Grabien Media. CNN only mentioned her name once during the same time period for an unrelated story.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/a> covered the story with a headline, \u201cAfter Social Media Scrutiny, Mamdani Says His Wife Is a \u2018Private Person,\u2019\u201d that was widely criticized by the right.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mayor said his wife\u2019s views should not be subject to broad public scrutiny. They were not married when she liked the posts; the couple wed in early 2025, and he did not enter the Democratic primary for mayor until\u00a0October 2024,\u201d the Times reported after a brief mention that \u201cDuwaji liked posts on Instagram that were supportive of the Palestinian cause immediately after the attacks\u201d of Oct. 7.<\/p>\n

The Times then compared Duwaji\u2019s actions to the wife of Rep. Dan Goldman<\/a>, D-N.Y.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic officials have faced questions over the political activities or other actions of a spouse or partner, most recently earlier this week. The Times\u00a0reported\u00a0that Corinne Levy Goldman, the wife of Representative Daniel Goldman of New York, liked or reposted social media posts from several right-wing accounts that some saw as hateful or insensitive toward Palestinians and Black people,\u201d the Times noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Times enlisted Sophie Ellman-Golan, the director communications at Jews For Racial & Economic Justice, which the Times called \u201ca progressive organizing group for the Jewish left,\u201d to further downplay Duwaji\u2019s actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEllman-Golan said it was unfair to equate Ms. Duwaji\u2019s social media likes with those of Ms. Goldman\u2019s, in part because Mr. Goldman\u2019s wife serves as his campaign treasurer while Ms. Duwaji had no official role in Mr. Mamdani\u2019s campaign for mayor,\u201d the Times reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many of the posts that Duwaji liked weren\u2019t typical social media messages that are critical of Israel, but rather messages that \u201cunambiguously celebrated the terrorist attack, which saw nearly 1,200 Israelis and foreign workers killed, thousands wounded, 251 civilians and military personnel kidnapped and numerous episodes of sexual assault,\u201d according to Jewish Insider. One of the posts featured livestreamed footage of the terror attack and the words \u201cbreaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation,\u201d according to the publication, while others featured the slogan \u201cfrom the river to the sea,\u201d which is often used as a rallying cry for the total elimination of Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Status, a media newsletter run by former CNN employees, used the fact that CBS News covered the story to put a harsh spotlight on its pro-Israel editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe report focusing on the social media use of the mayor\u2019s wife\u2014who does not hold public office\u2014more than two years ago, struck many as peculiar, something that might have appeared on\u00a0The Free Press,\u00a0Bari Weiss\u2019\u00a0anti-woke and vehemently pro-Israel opinion site,\u201d Status reported.<\/p>\n

MAMDANI\u2019S RESPONSE TO TRUMP\u2019S IRAN STRIKE SPARKS CONSERVATIVE BACKLASH: \u2018ROOTING FOR THE AYATOLLAH\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSome CBS staffers who spoke to\u00a0Status\u00a0on condition of anonymity, expressed growing concern that Weiss\u2014who has been an outspoken supporter of Israel\u2014was making editorial decisions more in line with the type of content published by The Free Press, blurring the ideological lines between the two and fundamentally altering CBS News\u2019 DNA in the process,\u201d the newsletter continued before quoting a \u201cMamdani confidant\u201d who anonymously scolded Weiss as biased. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Obama staffer turned writer and podcaster Ben Rhodes took a similar path and quoted CBS News\u2019 report on Duwaji\u2019s actions with his own commentary about Weiss.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a war, high prices, job losses, AI unleashed, and on and on. But Bari Weiss\u2019s CBS is on the case of the NY Mayor\u2019s wife\u2019s likes from years ago. WTF is going on,\u201d Rhodes posted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When asked about the reports, Mamdani did not deny that his wife liked the posts, but argued she is a \u201cprivate person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife is the love of my life, and she\u2019s also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cI, however, was elected to represent all 8.5 million people in the city, and I believe that it\u2019s my responsibility, because of that role, to answer any questions about my thoughts and my policies and my decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organization, October 7 was a horrific war crime, and he has condemned that violence unequivocally,\u201d a City Hall spokesperson told Jewish Insider.<\/p>\n

CNN, MS NOW, New York Times, NBC4 New York, Vanity Fair, Status and Crooked Media did not immediately respond to requests for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
