The NYPD<\/a> said a device found in Carl Schurz Park near Zohran Mamdani<\/a>‘s residence, Gracie Mansion, was examined and determined not to pose a threat. <\/p>\n

The all-clear was given at 2:40 p.m. <\/p>\n

Earlier Tuesday, police responded to a report of a potentially suspicious device just days after authorities said two men ignited a homemade explosive <\/a>in an \u201cISIS\u2011inspired terrorism\u201d near the New York City<\/a> mayor’s Upper East Side residence.<\/p>\n

NYPD told Newsweek in a telephone interview that a “confirmed device\u201d has been found.<\/p>\n

In a post on X, NYPD wrote, “ADVISORY: Due to a suspicious device, East End Avenue between East 85th and East 87th Street, as well as East 86th Street between York Avenue and East End Avenue are closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Additionally, Carl Schurz Park is closed at this time.”<\/p>\n

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, a Democrat, responded to the news on X.<\/p>\n

“I have been briefed by @NYPDPC on a suspicious device found in Carl Schurz Park in my district. To ensure our community remains safe, we encourage everyone to follow the NYPD\u2019s guidance and stay away from the area,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

Unclear if Device Related to Earlier Gracie Mansion Clash<\/p>\n

Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, both of Pennsylvania, face federal charges <\/a>tied to Saturday\u2019s incident, and police told NBC 4 News it was not yet clear whether Tuesday\u2019s response was related.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, an improvised explosive device was thrown during clashes between anti-Islam demonstrators and counter-protesters outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife. Monday, a criminal complaint said the men admitted to being inspired by the\u00a0Islamic State extremist group.<\/p>\n

The Department of Justice (DOJ) accused the two men of\u00a0acting in support of ISIS<\/a>\u00a0in a press release on Monday afternoon. Attorney General Pam Bondi described the act as an “alleged ISIS-inspired act of terrorism that could have killed American citizens.”<\/p>\n

The incident came as two protests<\/a> were held outside of Gracie Mansion: \u201cStop the Islamic Takeover of New York City, Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer\u201d and a counter-protest called \u201cRun Nazis Out of New York City.” Balat allegedly threw an explosive device toward the protesters just after noon, the DOJ said.<\/p>\n

Immediately after, he allegedly ran to another location and received another device from Kayumi and ignited it near where several police officers were standing, the DOJ said. He then jumped over a barricade and was arrested by police officers.<\/p>\n

They are facing charges including attempted provision of material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, use of a weapon of mass destruction, transportation of explosive materials, interstate transportation and receipt of explosives and unlawful possession of destructive devices.<\/p>\n

The clash occurred during an anti-Islam protest that was first organized by\u00a0Jake Lang<\/a>, a conservative influencer\u00a0who was\u00a0pardoned for charges tied to the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot. The protest drew a large counterdemonstration, and the scene had grown chaotic before the devices were thrown.<\/p>\n

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, said on X on Monday the state remained “in a heightened threat environment.<\/a>“<\/p>\n

Natalie Hernandez, a reporter for News 12 New York, wrote to X: “I was at the park with my dog when officers came up to us and told us to leave immediately. They then started putting up yellow tape.”<\/p>\n

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote to X on Sunday: “Emir Balat and\u00a0Ibrahim Kayumi have been charged with committing a heinous act of terrorism and proclaiming their allegiance to\u00a0ISIS<\/a>. They\u00a0should be held fully accountable for their actions. We will continue to keep New Yorkers safe. We will not tolerate terrorism or violence in our city.”<\/p>\n
