Since the inception of Good Neighbors Group (GNG) in 2006, Rando has stepped up to volunteer at various events held by the nonprofit.

Rando first became involved through a connection in her own neighborhood — GNG founder Julie Shay’s mother, Francine Shay, is a fellow Manhattan Beach resident. Rando has led Manhattan Beach’s participation in Good Neighbors Group’s annual S(o)uper Bowl since the event’s inception nine years ago.

“Because I’m Francine’s neighbor and I’m a bit of an extrovert at some level, I volunteered,” Rando said.

During the food drive, which takes place annually over Super Bowl weekend, neighborhoods compete by collecting donations for local food pantries. As the neighborhood captain for Manhattan Beach, Rando spreads the word about the event both online and in-person. This year, she distributed about 100 flyers, and she put a large poster on the neighborhood bulletin board. She also sent text messages and emails to community members, following up with reminders about the upcoming food drive.

In addition, Rando helps take charge of the collection. She and Shay put out a donation table in Shay’s driveway, and Rando then takes the donations into her own house to keep them out of the cold. At the end of the event, Rando brings donations to the neighborhood’s designated food pantry, which was Open Hands of Maryland this year.

“It was a challenge this year because of the freezing weather, the ice and the snow,” Rando said.

She quoted the S(o)upper Bowl flyer: “Like the flyer says, ‘No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.’ So I think that people are hungry to give in any way they can.”

During this year’s S(o)uper Bowl, Manhattan Beach collected 462 items. In addition to her own donations, Rando made donating accessible for others by shopping for homebound neighbors and friends who live outside the community.

In total, between 71 neighborhoods and businesses, the S(o)uper Bowl collected over 18,000 personal care and food items this year, which went to six food pantries and the Anne Arundel County Food Bank.

“Good Neighbors Group reaches into so many areas of help in really connecting with other nonprofits who are doing so much good and having a social impact and environmental impact in the community,” Rando said.

The S(o)uper Bowl isn’t the only GNG event that Rando takes part in. The nonprofit’s environmental mission is important to her as well. She helped the Rogue Gardeners clear out the garden at Pluto Station on the B&A Trail. She also helps each year at the Earth Day Festival, which will take place this year on April 25. In past years, she sold plants at the festival and then donated the money she made to GNG.

She also participates in Donations Before Dumpsters, which helps people rehome or recycle items instead of just throwing them out.

“This goes back to sometime in the ‘90s, I think,” Rando said. “I was living in Columbia, and (my home state of) Massachusetts was doing recycling, but we weren’t. So I was driving home one time and filled a bag with recyclables, and my father said, ‘I can’t believe you came all the way to Massachusetts with your trash.’ I said, ‘It’s not trash. It’s recycling.’”

Though Rando plays an active role in GNG in these other ways, the S(o)uper Bowl is an especially important event to her. “Growing up in an Italian Catholic family, food was the centerpiece of our lives,” Rando said. “I also just feel really moved that in some small way for at least some small period of time, we can support our neighbors in need, in need of food, and take away a little bit of food insecurity.”

As the S(o)uper Bowl neighborhood captain for Manhattan Beach, Nancy Rando distributed about 100 flyers this year, and…

[35
75,84,83,9,24,63
0":"post-161787","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-manhattan","8":"tag-manhattan","9":"tag-manhattan-headlines","10":"tag-manhattan-news","11":"tag-new-york","12":"tag-new-york-city","13":"tag-nyc
["GET
