George Santos\u2019s prison term was cut years short Friday, when President Trump commuted his federal fraud sentence, but the disgraced ex-lawmaker\u2019s legal troubles may not be over after a state prosecutor seemed to signal that local charges could be brought.<\/p>\n<p>Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NassauDA\/status\/1980653892640903256\" rel=\"nofollow\">said in a statement<\/a> posted to the social platform X that she has been at the \u201cforefront\u201d of bringing Santos to justice since first learning of his actions. The county is home to part of the district Santos represented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud of the work my office has done, and the conviction achieved in partnership with the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office,\u201d Donnelly said. \u201cWhile the office cannot comment on ongoing investigations, suffice it to say that I remain focused on prosecuting political corruption wherever it exists regardless of political affiliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Nassau County District Attorney\u2019s Office declined to further elaborate at this time, regarding whether Donnelly is investigating or considering pursuing state charges against Santos.<\/p>\n<p>Trump announced the commutation in a <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115391767709119144\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post on Truth Social<\/a> that emphasized the former congressman\u2019s \u201cCourage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorge Santos was somewhat of a\u00a0\u2018rogue,\u2019\u00a0but there are many rogues throughout our Country that\u00a0aren\u2019t forced to serve seven years in prison,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Santos served just 84 days\u00a0of his more than seven-year sentence, handed down after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft as part of a plea deal last summer.<\/p>\n<p>He faced 23 federal counts for a number of criminal schemes, including money laundering, theft of public funds, making materially false statements to the House of Representatives and Federal Election Commission (FEC) and falsifying records submitted to obstruct the FEC.<\/p>\n<p>Santos initially insisted he would not seek clemency but <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/5291828-george-santos-donald-trump-clemency-call\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changed his tune<\/a> after his sentencing, telling\u00a0British media personality\u00a0Piers Morgan\u00a0in May, \u201cI\u2019ll take a commutation, clemency, whatever the president is willing to give me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Updated at 1:34 p.m. EDT.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media Inc.
