What matters, she said, is supporting the working class and getting the job done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OLMYIEGAKRBOXKFXZYCBUIJP4I\">\u201cBut if you wanted a label, I think you could call me an economic populist, but I don\u2019t think that that means as much as my track record of putting working people first,\u201d Ziogas told the Advance\/SILive.com.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SHTJ7GTSQJG3TFYFJBTUGQUHNA\">Ziogas, a Pleasant Plains resident and labor leader, announced this week she is running in the Democratic primary to represent Staten Island and southern Brooklyn in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Meet Ziogas<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V2TDO52XKFDPNOHA5W7B5ZEX44\">A married mother of two, Ziogas is originally from Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YL5Y77USSZCURGVJ34KZA3QNRQ\">She has lived in New York for the last 20 years, the last 10 of which have been spent on Staten Island. She had previously been living in various parts of the city before meeting her husband, a lifelong Staten Islander.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"772NEQO64ZGWNJ3HKW7TVXSMQI\">\u201cAnd I like to say that I\u2019m a Staten Islander by love, because I knew that if it was going to be my husband, it was going to be Staten Island and so that\u2019s fine by me because I also love it here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L47MA5QZB5GDZKT3ULPJ3GPUIM\">Ziogas first came to the New York City area for education. She obtained a bachelor\u2019s degree in history and sociology from Central Connecticut State University and attended the City University of New York\u2019s Joseph Murphy Institute in Manhattan to complete some graduate work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HL4ERW7ZXNDBBLD7WYJJQ724EI\">Expressing a love of learning, Ziogas recounted how she dove into history and began to learn more about the labor movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZGPWKTAKA5G77DQXMP73XLKRIE\">\u201cThat\u2019s kind of what got me interested in the program at CUNY for labor studies,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BV573AWVQFG35LT6EIXIPYAESI\">A deeper understanding of the labor movement naturally appealed to Ziogas, who has three grandparents with a background in the United Auto Workers labor union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4BT5WIVUFVHOPGWORIESKSRL24\">While she may not have pursued the path of auto work, Ziogas continued the legacy of labor and became a first generation union electrician.<\/p>\n<p>A labor leader<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WRB4Z4NSUVDIZCI457Q2D4KYM4\">For the last 20 years, Ziogas has been a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3. She is running for Congress in 2026.(Advance\/SILive.com | Joseph Ostapiuk)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XUD2QXXHX5GONKSUMVBT4N5VJI\">Ziogas took on projects \u201cboth big and small,\u201d including 3 World Trade Center, the extension of the 7 subway line and PS 62, the Kathleen Grimm School of Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground in Rossville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6NUA7QOTM5ELFDWEV5LWM5V2LY\">A few years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/05\/staten-island-woman-emerges-from-18-month-negotiation-to-ink-standard-setting-union-offshore-wind-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/05\/staten-island-woman-emerges-from-18-month-negotiation-to-ink-standard-setting-union-offshore-wind-deal.html\">Ziogas took the lead in an 18-month negotiation<\/a> as the director of labor relations for Orsted Offshore in North America on the opposite side of the table from representatives from North America\u2019s Building Trades Unions and international union leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7X2B34DMCVAVNEUF727WM2NTP4\">These negotiations ultimately resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/us.orsted.com\/news-archive\/2022\/05\/national-offshore-wind-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the National Offshore Wind Agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NRHTRBVJ7RH2LJIEOCVLTKENXQ\">\u201cFor folks that are unfamiliar with it, it\u2019s a landmark labor contract with North America\u2019s Building Trades Unions, so the building trades, that has set the standard for the entire industry,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt ensures that as we build this next generation of energy infrastructure, move toward energy independence, that we\u2019re doing it with union labor at the center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F3DNSYR6Q5BGRI65VSTJD7OWBQ\">According to Ziogas, to date, that agreement for the project she oversaw has generated over 5 million union hours for tradespeople.<\/p>\n<p>Her platform<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2YT7KGC5IVA3BJZK4AA37FHMCA\">The moment she knew she was going to run for office came at the realization that \u201cour political infrastructure is completely broken\u201d and \u201cworking people on Staten Island and Brooklyn are still getting screwed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"626ILQJBIZDHLMCNDJALTXTGQE\">\u201cNeither party is delivering on issues that actually matter for working people or move the needle for a family\u2019s budget,\u201d Ziogas told the Advance\/SILive.com. \u201cI\u2019m not a career politician, but I\u2019m service oriented and I believe that if you want a job done right that you should send somebody who knows how to build and fix things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6ZUK3WNAXFAMTANZVM4JWJDOPI\">Ziogas believes the issues of affordability, labor rights, as well as transit and infrastructure are those that unite the borough\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2J54GI5FTFBPXPF7NB2BSIBVPI\">Her platform includes lowering out-of-pocket costs and protecting health care subsidies, securing funding to expand transit and complete the coastal resiliency projects, as well as protecting residential streets from developers looking to overbuild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YS4DUZO4HRHZ3MH5TRQDYFTBPY\">An unapologetic pragmatist, Ziogas has expressed that she will work with the president or anyone else who proposes a plan to lower the cost of living or improve the infrastructure of Staten Island and southern Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NEPYIIYEHVEEVN5MKX44OQ5FQU\">For Ziogas, Staten Island is \u201cGod\u2019s Country,\u201d as it is where she has her \u201clittle patch of heaven\u201d and raised her family.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allison Ziogas runs for Congress\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/JX4JORDLRFAIDOXETDGKJPHINU.jpg\"  \/>Allison Ziogas announced her campaign for the Democratic primary in New York\u2019s 11th Congressional District at Local 3 Staten Island Electrical Club in Great Kills on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.(Advance\/SILive.com | Scott R. The people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"37GHLNGF4VCFRAUQUU2DFKH47U\">A people who \u201cactually show up for each other\u201d in times of need; a people with \u201creal grit and loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZBN44HFLP5EAJDISMYQCUOJOQ4\">\u201cWe\u2019re a small town in the biggest city of the world and I want to make sure that the people that show up for each other have a representative that shows up for them,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The pitch<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZYEWETBUGBDKTNI6PHPDJZAWPQ\">Although the borough tends to lean Republican, Ziogas believes she can win the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UT3OY2W6ARDKNLQ4QQ6EGZZJQU\">\u201cSo I think that we can flip it by recognizing that, sure, Staten Island leans Republican, it\u2019s a labor stronghold first,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QAIIYVUHMJGHNDY3PCWGYYV2P4\">\u201cSo I\u2019m running because I believe that the people of NY-11 are tired of the noise; they want a change and I\u2019m answering the call,\u201d Ziogas added. \u201cSo my path to victory really is through the thousands of union households in this district who know me, trust me and know that I\u2019ll actually deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OR7P7SJ6ORFGTBEC4CCRDSTA6Y\">On Tuesday, Ziogas launched her campaign at Local 3 Staten Island Electrical Club in Great Kills surrounded by her fellow union workers. At the event, her candidacy was endorsed by the IBEW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IZ4666TKL5EYLKOEHAINOKRHQA\">\u201cIn a Congress that\u2019s full of lawyers and career politicians, I think it\u2019s time that we had a worker who knows that the middle class isn\u2019t built from the top down, but from the ground up by working people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J7SSG3FPUVGHPPAEBJHSN7L6O4\">\u201cI\u2019ve shared in the pride of building this city, I have stood in the same trenches as many Staten Islanders, I\u2019ve walked on the same picket lines as many Staten Islanders. And my commitment to labor isn\u2019t a political stance, it\u2019s been my life\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NAQY4GOJ55CCHFKMME4WYGLTMI\">Ziogas\u2019 candidacy sets up a primary matchup with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/06\/career-educator-basketball-coach-launches-early-bid-for-staten-island-congressional-seat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/06\/career-educator-basketball-coach-launches-early-bid-for-staten-island-congressional-seat.html\">career educator Troy McGhie<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/he-was-a-911-responder-and-an-nypd-officer-but-can-he-flip-staten-island-congressional-seat-blue.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/he-was-a-911-responder-and-an-nypd-officer-but-can-he-flip-staten-island-congressional-seat-blue.html\">former NYPD member and educator Michael DeCillis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W3P3IN6VMVFAXGU5NP37LUMR7M\">The winner will face Rep.
