Former presidential nominee and\u00a0ex-Utah senator Mitt Romney said his family is \u201cheartbroken\u201d after his\u00a0sister-in-law jumped or fell to her death <\/a>in a Los Angeles suburb \u2014 just months after splitting from Romney\u2019s brother.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,\u201d Romney said in a statement to People<\/a> on Monday. \u201cWe ask for privacy during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrie Elizabeth Romney\u00a0was discovered dead on a street near a shopping mall parking garage in Valencia, Calif., at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday. She was 64 years old.<\/p>\n

Authorities said her car was discovered inside a parking garage near the city\u2019s Hyatt Regency Hotel. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u201cunknown at the moment\u201d if Carrie \u201cjumped or fell\u201d from the multi-story parking garage or a nearby building, Los Angeles County Deputy Brenda Serna said in an email. <\/p>\n

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office confirmed Carrie had died Friday, her cause of death is listed as \u201cdeferred,\u201d indicating that further tests and investigation are pending. Her body was listed as \u201cready for release,\u201d according to People.<\/p>\n

However, authorities said foul play does not appear to be involved, NBC Los Angeles<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

Carrie\u00a0had been married to the ex-Utah senator\u2019s older brother, George Romney, 81 \u2014 a well-known attorney and the father of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel.<\/p>\n

The former presidential nominee\u2019s brother \u2014 who goes by Scott \u2014 had filed for divorce on June 10 after eight years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences, according to the Daily Mail.<\/a> <\/p>\n

He also stated in the filing that most of their assets had been obtained separately before the marriage. He noted that Carrie was seeking spousal support, which he opposed, and requested that she go back to using her maiden name, Carrie Elizabeth Dimas, the outlet reported. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear when the two met, but the couple tied the knot in November 2016.<\/p>\n

However, they appeared to have kept their relationship private. From 2012 onward, the two quietly stepped away from public view \u2014 avoiding social media, interviews, and public appearances together, the Daily Mail reported.<\/p>\n

The divorce would have brought an end to Scott Romney\u2019s third marriage.<\/p>\n

The 81-year-old currently works as an attorney at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn in Michigan and serves on several boards, including Compuware Corporation.<\/p>\n

Romney mounted a presidential campaign against former President Barack Obama in 2012, gaining significant national support before ultimately losing the race.<\/p>\n

Scott Romney was the most publicly visible of his siblings throughout his brother\u2019s 2012 campaign, according to the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While in the Senate, Romney was the only Republican to vote to convict President Trump<\/a> during his first impeachment trial in 2020.<\/p>\n

The Former presidential nominee\u00a0repeated his vote<\/a>\u00a0during Trump\u2019s second impeachment trial the following year.<\/p>\n
