{"id":165001,"date":"2026-03-16T14:46:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/165001\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T14:46:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:46:09","slug":"mamdani-to-lower-speed-limit-in-nyc-school-zones-to-15-mph-invoking-sammys-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/165001\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani to lower speed limit in NYC school zones to 15 mph, invoking Sammy&#8217;s Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Mamdani said Monday that the New York City Department of Transportation will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/finance\/vehicles\/school-zone-camera-violations.page\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lowering speed limits in 800 school zones<\/a> to 15 mph under Sammy\u2019s Law, which allows the city to set limits below the statewide minimum.<\/p>\n<p>The move is the first step to lowering speed limits in all school zones citywide, the mayor said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s expansion of slow-zones for schools across all five boroughs is just the beginning,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cLower speeds save lives, and we will use every tool at our disposal to protect our neighbors as they move about our city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speed limit for the majority of the city\u2019s roughly 2,300 school zones is 25 mph, while about 700 school zones currently have a 20-mph speed limit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"(Shutterstock)\" width=\"3744\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shutterstock_2453563283.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"8741930\" \/>(Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>Under the plan announced Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/downloads\/pdf\/school-slow-zones.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all 20-mph-limit zones<\/a> will be reduced to 15 mph, and an additional 100 15 mph zones will be selected by the city\u2019s DOT based on Vision Zero data, which tracks recent collisions and other incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The new limit is expected to go into effect following a mandatory 60-day public comment period.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Transportation Department, a person struck by a car moving at 25 mph is three times more likely to die than a person struck by a car traveling 15 mph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeeding is the leading cause of traffic deaths,\u201d Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said in a statement. \u201cEven a small speed reduction can mean the difference between life and death in a crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"NYPD Officers conduct radar speed checks on the 96th Street.\" width=\"3000\" height=\"273\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DNFL-_50V7370.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"8741927\" \/>NYPD officers conduct radar speed checks. (Angus Mordant for New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>The limits will be largely enforced by the city\u2019s school zone speed cameras, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/keeping-families-safe-governor-signs-legislation-extending-new-york-city-school-speed-camera\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roughly 2,400 of which are authorized to issue automated tickets.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The school slowdown is made possible by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2024\/05\/07\/new-york-city-set-to-lower-speed-limits-following-passage-of-sammys-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sammy\u2019s Law<\/a>, a 2024 law that enables the city to set speed limits on smaller roads lower than the statewide minimum.
