Bank\u00a0of\u00a0America\u00a0has settled a\u00a0civil lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0brought by women who accused the\u00a0bank\u00a0of facilitating their sexual abuse by Jeffrey Epstein, court records showed on Monday.<\/p>\n

Lawyers for the\u00a0bank\u00a0and the women told Manhattan-based US District Judge Jed Rakoff in a March 12 telephone call that they had reached a \u201csettlement in principle,\u201d a court filing said. The terms of the settlement were not immediately clear.<\/p>\n

The settlement requires Rakoff\u2019s approval. Lawyers for both sides are scheduled to submit legal papers about the settlement by March 27, and the\u00a0judge scheduled a court hearing for April 2 to consider approving\u00a0the deal.<\/p>\n

Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer for the women, said in a statement, \u201cToday\u2019s resolution of the case against\u00a0Bank\u00a0of America is one more step on the road to much deserved justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesman for\u00a0Bank\u00a0of America declined to comment.<\/p>\n

The proposed class action, filed in October by a woman using the pseudonym Jane Doe, accused the nation\u2019s second-largest\u00a0bank\u00a0of\u00a0ignoring\u00a0suspicious financial transactions related to Epstein despite a \u201cplethora\u201d of information about his crimes because it valued profit over protecting victims.<\/p>\n

Bank\u00a0of\u00a0America\u00a0has said Doe alleged merely that it provided routine services to people who at the time had no known links to Epstein, and that any suggestion that it was more deeply involved was \u201cthreadbare and meritless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rakoff ruled in January that\u00a0Bank\u00a0of\u00a0America\u00a0must face\u00a0Doe\u2019s claims that it knowingly benefited from Epstein\u2019s sex trafficking and obstructed enforcement of the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Act. Among the transactions Doe flagged were payments to Epstein by Apollo Global Management\u2019s\u00a0billionaire co-founder, Leon Black<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Black stepped down as Apollo\u2019s chief executive in 2021 after a review by an outside law firm found he had paid Epstein $158 million for tax and estate planning.<\/p>\n

He has denied wrongdoing and said he was unaware of Epstein\u2019s criminal conduct.<\/p>\n

The deposition is not expected to go forward because of the settlement. A scheduled May 11 trial will also not take place if Rakoff approves the settlement.<\/p>\n

Doe\u2019s lawyers have also sued other alleged enablers of Epstein\u2019s sex trafficking, and in 2023 reached settlements of $290 million with JPMorgan Chase\u00a0and $75 million<\/a> with Deutsche\u00a0Bank\u00a0on behalf of his accusers.<\/p>\n

Epstein died in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
